MO Local Obituaries for the Week of Nov. 15, 2001 Trula Esther Hutchings Trula Esther Hutchings (nee Fryman), passed away November 1, 2001, at her residence in Steelville, Mo., at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 1 day. She was born on December 31, 1907 at Coldwater, Mo., to the late Jerry Fryman and Mary Elizabeth (Hargus) Fryman. Trula was united in marriage to Gentry Hutchings on April 14, 1926, at Ironton, Mo. Her husband preceded her in death on September 26, 1942. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Sybil Ogrzewalla and Charlene Amburgy; seven sisters, Ollie Fryman, Stella Douglas, Lora Barton, Opal Bell, Lena Akers, Flora Stevens, and Hazel Tinker; three brothers, Arley, Everett, and Samuel Fryman. Those who remain to mourn her passing are three sons, Rick and Karen Hutchings of Cuba, Sonny and Mary Hutchings of Steelville, Edward and Sandra Robertson of Steelville; six daughters, Geraldine and Jerry King of Berryman, Jestine and Darald Evans of Effingham, Illinois, Patricia and Odell Evans of Vichy, Wanda Hawkins, Betty and Curtis Lefler, and Donna Tittsworth, all of Steelville. Three sisters, Retha Dobbs and husband Marvin, Ima Gean Maness and husband Cliff, all of Potosi, and Leota Lewis of St. Louis; 48 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2001, at Britton Chapel with Rev. Jerry Beers officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Ronnie Ogrzewalla, Eugene Harmon, Gentry Hutchings, Michael Beers, Jimmy Evans, Donnie Evans, Tim Hutchings, Tim Amburgy, Glen Robertson. Interment was in the Ottery Creek Cemetery, Belleview, Mo. under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Potosi. Betty Shepherd Joachim Mrs. Betty Joachim died at Gibbs Care Center, Steelville, Mo., on November 7, 2001. Betty was born in Eldon, Mo. on November 15, 1915, to the union of the late William C. Shepherd and Effie Pearl (Winnop) Shepherd. She graduated from Eldon High School and the Columbia School of Journalism. During World War II, she enlisted in the WAC's (Women's Army Corp.) and served in London during the blitz before being transferred to Paris, France. She then was transferred to the Battle of the Bulge area. She was awarded the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star for hazardous duty just behind the front lines and 3 Overseas Service Bars. After discharge she worked with Mike Wallace on his television program. She later became the foreign editor for the Wall Street Journal. She married Paul Joachim on October 3, 1966 and moved to Steelville, Mo. where they lived in the area from 1978 to present. Paul is a triple volunteer veteran of World War II, Korean and Vietnam (was never called to active duty in Vietnam). They operated a small trucking business in the area. "Goodnight sweet princess-and may flights of angels sing thee to thy rest." Mrs. Joachim died after an extended period of illness of approximately seven years. In addition to her husband, Paul Joachim of Steelville, Mo.; Betty is survived by two brothers and one sister. Memorial services and burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Virginia A. Magill Virginia A. Magill, nee Rigus, age 78, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2001 at her residence in Warrenton, Mo. She was born March 29, 1923 in New Baden, Illinois. She worked as an inspector for Reynolds Manufacturing. She was the beloved wife of Harry W. Magill, mother of Harry W. Magill, Jr., Minna Kay "Kitty" and husband John Rothkopf and the late Patricia Marie Magill. She was the grandmother of Patrick and Matthew Magill, Angie and husband Kevin Bentlage, William M. Coffman, Jr., and Wade L. Coffman. She was the great-grandmother of Devon Means-Coffman, Jessica Bentlage and Blake Bentlage, sister of Robert, Marie and Bunny, aunt, sister-in-law, cousin and friend. Funeral services were conducted in the Chapel of Kriegshauser South Mortuary in St. Louis Wednesday, November 7, at 10 a.m. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mildred Pauline VanPatten Mildred Pauline VanPatten, daughter of Levi and Georgianna Sweeden Beezley, was born August 23, 1911, near Cuba, Mo. She departed this life Friday, October 26, 2001, in Christian Healthcare North, in Lebanon, Mo., at the age of 90 years, two months and three days. On June 15, 1929, she was united in marriage to George Nolan VanPatten, and to this union one daughter and one son were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George on April 11, 1998; a son, George Levi VanPatten in 1967; and four sisters, Betty Hughes, Mary Hedger, Willetta Goodman, and Bonnie Ledoux. Mildred is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Stanley Reed, Jr. of Plato, Mo.; three grandsons, Mark VanPatten of Jefferson City, Mo., Craig VanPatten of Sunnyvale, California, and Stanley Reed III, of St. Charles, Mo.; three granddaughters, Cynde Christy of Royale Grand, California, Robyn Weinman of Berkeley, California, and Brenda Welch of Belton, Texas. Seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William Beezley of Cuba, Mo.; three sisters, Irene Seener of St. Louis, Mo., Mabel Bland of Cuba, Mo., and Gertrude Schubert of Sullivan, Mo.; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends. She was born the oldest of nine children and was raised in Crawford County, Mo. While living in Steelville, Mo., she met and marriage George. They made their home near Nebo in the Gulf City community in the 1930's and then moved to Monett, Mo. for nine years. George's work with the Gulf Oil Company returned them to the Gulf City community, where they made their home on their Black Angus cattle farm. Besides being a devoted homemaker to her husband and family, Mildred also drove a school bus for the Plato School District for eight years. Mildred was a longtime active member of the Cedar Bluff Baptist Church and was involved in many phases of church life. She was a charter member of the Plato Eastern Star and was an active member of the Laclede County Republican Women's Club. Her life was centered around her family and her church. In her spare time she enjoyed making beautiful quilts, gardening, reading, and fishing. She was the long time correspondent for the Lebanon Daily Record and Rustic Republican newspapers, covering the Gulf City news. For four years, she was the official Nebo weather watcher for television station KY-3 out of Springfield. She also liked caring for her home and her cattle. Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, and was a caring neighbor and friend.
