Reverend Michael H. Dalton, Jr.
The Reverend Michael H. Dalton, Jr., 80, a Deacon in the Catholic Church,
civil rights leader, and social worker, died of a stroke on November 9,
2000 at his home in St. Louis, Missouri.
A funeral Mass celebrating his life was held at 10 a.m. on Monday, November
13, 2000, at St. Monica's Parish at 12136 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur,
Missouri. Burial was in St. Monica's Cemetery immediately following.
Reverend Dalton was born May 7, 1920 to Dr. Michael H. and Eva Lamburth
Dalton. He married Gloria Frances Meyer on September 3, 1949, and she
survives.
He received his Masters Degree in Social Work from St. Louis University. He
was the Director of the Family Services Agency of Southern Illinois, and
Director of Catholic Social Services of the Belleville, IL Diocese.
Throughout his life, he was a civil rights leader. He founded and directed
a civil rights organization, funded by President Johnson's war on poverty,
based in St. Louis and Metro-East Illinois, called Operation Family.
It brought families of different racial and socioeconomic backgrounds
together. He was honored by President Johnson at an awards ceremony in
Washington, D.C., for his work in promoting harmony between the races.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather John Ursbrook of
Steelville, and his brother, William Dalton of Elyria, Ohio.
Maude Ellen Stroupe
Maude Ellen Stroupe was born Saturday, March 29, 1924 to the late Joseph
William Douglas and Sarah Caroline Anderson Douglas and departed this life
Sunday, November 5, 2000 at the Cuba Manor Nursing Center in Cuba MO at the
age of 76 years 7 months and 7 days.
Maude married Harry Herskel Stroupe on November 2, 1946 and to this union
nine children were born. She and Harry made their home together until his
death on September 4, 1978.
Maude accepted the Lord early in life and was Baptized and joined Glory
Hill Assembly of God Church at age 15.
She enjoyed going to church, watching television, and loved her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Maude was a hard worker and worked
at Bussman Fuse in St. Louis, MO for 15 years before retiring.
Maude was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harry; one son
Joseph; four brothers James Monroe Douglas, William Moses Douglas, Charles
Houston Douglas, and Alfred Landon Douglas; three sisters Ruth Orr, Opal
Walls, and Minnie Stringer; three brothers-in-laws Hershal Stringer, Joe
Giles, and Jess Walls.
Those who remain to mourn her passing are her loving children Raymond and
Mary Stroupe of Barnhart, MO; Harold James Stroupe of Steelville; Fred and
Sue Stroupe of Bourbon; Michael Stroupe of St. Louis, MO; Kenneth Stroupe
of Sullivan; Linda and Richard Heflin of Cuba; Mary Stroupe and companion
Joseph Storey of Steelville; and Debra and Richard Holes of Cuba.
Her daughter-in-law Linda Kay Stroupe of St. Louis, MO; her brother Robert
and Gloria Douglas of St. Louis; her sister Sarah Elizabeth Giles of
Berkley, MO; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws Jess Orr of Champaign,
IL; Rainey and Velma Stroupe of Potosi; Lloyd Stroupe of Wichita, KS; and
Nonna Lee Stroupe of Caledonia, MO.
Her 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other
relatives and many friends all who will sadly miss and fondly remember
Maude Ellen Stroupe.
Visitation was held Tuesday, November 7, 2000 from 6-9 p.m. at the Hutson
Funeral Home in Steelville, MO.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2000 at the
Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville, with Rev. Larry Buettner officiating.
Paul Hutson sang Amazing Grace and Farther Along accompanied by Janie James
on the piano. Anita Donal sang How Beautiful Heaven Must Be.
Pallbearers were James Derlerth Sam Putnam, Joseph Storey, Tony Holmes,
Fred Stroupe and Raymond Stroupe.
Burial was in the Steelville Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Hutson Funeral Home in
Steelville.
