MO Local Obituaries for the Week of November 24, 2004 Estelle Campbell Estelle Ruth Campbell, 94, of Owensville, departed from life October 25, 2004 at the Gasconde Manor Nursing Home in Owensville. She was born December 29, 1909, the daughter of Jacob and Clara Taylor Souders. She was married February 11, 1945 to Paul Campbell. They lived and worked at many locations including Fort Riley, Kansas; Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; Old Stone in Gap, Virginia; Sanford, North Carolina; and Elizabethton, Tennessee. After her husband's death, she moved to the Cuba and Owensville area. She was a 50-year and over member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 398 in Cuba. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Roland, Andrew, Harrison and Raymond; two sisters, Lula Souders and Golda Drexel; two half-brothers, Edward and Alfred; a half-sister, Cora Carroll and a nephew, Jack Drexel and his wife Lynn. Her closest surviving relative is her niece, Norma Crutcher and Norma's children, Joy and Danny. Other survivors include her nephew's children, Lisa and Nick and his stepdaughter, Joanne. Larry O. Clark Larry O. Clark passed away on Nov. 16 in Plano, Texas. He was born on Nov. 26, 1939 in Kansas to the late Clyde and Beth Clark and spent his childhood in Conway Springs, Kansas. In May of 1965 he graduated with one of the first Masters in Computer Science from Rolla Mines and Metallurgy, now known as the University of Missouri at Rolla. He married Carol Jean Pursley on November 26, 1965 and would have celebrated his 39th wedding anniversary with Carol this year. Larry worked for GM/EDS from 1965 to 2003. He also worked at NASA through EDS from 1987 to 1991, which was the highlight of his career and gave him a passion for space exploration. Larry was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church. Deeply devoted to his family, Larry was his family's anchor and guide, a rare man who believed in loyalty, honesty, and devotion not only to his family but also to God, his country, and his job. He was the "go-to-man" if you needed help with cars, computers, or maintenance. He enjoyed an occasional beer, Cowboy's football, hiking, traveling, and reading. Being "Papa" to his grandchildren was icing on the cake. Larry is survived by his wife, Carol of Piano, Texas; children, Keith Clark of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Dawn and Tracy Smith of Celina, Texas, and Karma Clark of Brooklyn, New York. Grandchildren, Stori, and Sierra Smith. Brothers, Dan Clark and wife Barbara of Emporia, Kansas and Bob Clark and wife Rosetta of Cokato, Minnesota; sisters, Linda Clark and husband Paul of Portland, Oregon, Darlene Hanington and husband Dale of Lakewood, Colorado, and Karen Magill and husband Richard of Redonda Beach, California. Brother-in-law, John Pursley and wife Jane of Butler, Missouri; sisters-in-law, JoEllen Finkelstein of Ballwin, Missouri and Sharon Pursley of Pompono Beach, Illinois, and numerous nieces and nephews. Larry's family received friends on Friday, November 19, 2004 at Ted Dickey Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 20, 2004 at the Orate Presbyterian Church, 4300 W. Park Blvd., Piano, Texas at 2 p.m. Arrangements were by the Ted Dickey Funeral Home, Plano, Texas. Lucille Agnes Crabtree Lucille Agnes Crabtree, nee Payne, was born Wednesday, November 18, 1914, at Courtois, Missouri. A daughter of the late Ward Payne and Emma DeClue Payne. She entered eternal life Friday, November 12, 2004, at the home of her son, Robert Crabtree in Affton, Missouri, at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 24 days. Lucille was united in marriage to Orville Crabtree and they were blessed with two sons and two daughters. Orville preceded her in death, as did one son Douglas Crabtree and both her daughters, Doris (Crabtree) Gaddy, and infant Betty Crabtree. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Glenwood Payne and one sister, Eleanor Crocker and husband Harold and two brothers-in-law, Harry Wood and Jake Adams. Among those who remain to mourn her passing are her devoted son, Robert Crabtree of Affton, Missouri; one sister, Melba Young and husband Everett of Bloomfield, Missouri; five sisters-in-law, Rita Payne of St. Louis, Missouri, Eunice Wood of St. Louis, Missouri, Geraldine Alexander and husband Joe of Steelville, Missouri, Bernice Adams of Viburnum, Missouri, and Minnie Turnbough and husband Harold of St. Louis, Missouri. Four grandchildren, Robert L. Crabtree, Mark A. Crabtree, Sheri Scott and Steve Gaddy; seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Lucille Agnes Crabtree lay in state from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2004, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2004, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. James Peterman officiating. Musical selections were provided by Kevin and Kim Abney. Committal prayers and interment were in Lower Indian Creek Cemetery, Courtois, Missouri. Serving as pallbearers were Bob Crabtree, Jr., Rob Crabtree, Mark Crabtree, Stephen Gaddy, Yoman Scott and Dennis Young. James "Red" Eaton James "Red" Leroy Eaton of Cuba, Missouri was born on Sunday, November 17, 1929 in Keysville, Missouri. He passed away on Friday, November 12, 2004 at the age of 74 years, 11 months, and 25 days. "Red" married Pauline Jean Myers in Pocahontas, Arkansas on March 3, 1950 and made their home in Cuba for over 50 years. "Red" was self-employed as a truck driver until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and most of all spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law David Myers, Paul Myers, and Joe Myers; and sister-in-law Anne King. Those who remain to mourn his passing are his wife Pauline Myers Eaton of Cuba, Missouri; sisters-in-law Jackie Myers of Florida and Wanda Myers of Cuba, Missouri; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Della Fuchs Della Mae Fuchs, Owensville, Missouri died Friday, November 12, 2004, at Capital Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri at the age of 84. She was born on March 23, 1920 to Charles and Mary Goodwin Nelson at Oak Hill. On April 21, 1941, she married George Fuchs in Jefferson City, Missouri Mrs. Fuchs was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Owensville, Missouri. Surviving her are her children, Mike Fuchs and Mary Maciejewski and husband Allen, all of Owensville, Missouri; three sisters, Mary Sides and Esther Homeyer, both of Owensville, Missouri, and Iva Merkel of Bourbon, Missouri; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers Raymond, Bradsford, and John Nelson and four grandchildren. Services were held Monday, November 15, 2004 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Owensville with Rev. Lansford Lawrence officiating. Burial was in the Owensville City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville. Melba Garver Melba Garver, of Owensville, Missouri died Monday, November 15, 2004, at St. John's Mercy Hospital in Washington. She was 82. Mrs. Garver was born on March 11, 1922 in Owensville, Missouri to William and Agnes Schneider Kramme. On November 3, 1945. She married Harry Garver at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Owensville, Missouri. She was the owner and operator of Wee Fashion Shop in Owensville. She also was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, and belonged to the Women's Guild and the Dorcas Club as a charter member. Surviving her are daughters, Jane Maciejewski and husband Larry, and Mary Schell and husband Reginald, all of Owensville, Missouri; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and four sisters, Lillie Wilhite, Laura Farris, Lydia Eichler and Emma Uffmann. Services were held Wednesday, November l7 at St. Peter's UCC in Owensville, Missouri with Rev. Lansford Lawrence officiating. Burial followed in the Owensville City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville, Missouri. Samuel Hafley, Sr. Samuel Clarence Hafley, Sr., 74, died, Sunday, November 14, 2004, at his home in Owensville. He was born Jan. 21, 1930 in St. Louis, to Samuel and Golda Tucker Hafley. He married Nettie Lee Crider on April 18, 1953 at Oak Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Hafley was a career U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Faith Baptist Church in Belle, the Owensville Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, VFW Post 6133 Fleet Reserve Association and an advisor for Demolay and Job's Daughters, a 4-H leader and youth sports coach. Survivors include, his wife; sons, Sam Hafley Jr. of Belle, and James Hafley and wife Reyna of Gilbert, Arizona; daughters, Debra Nowack and husband Gilbert of Owensville, Missouri and Diane Oldfather and husband Phillip of Bland, Missouri. A daughter-in-law, Jane Hafley of Westphalia, Missouri; brother, Jack Ferling and wife Mabel of Owensville, Missouri; sisters, Vera Alpine and husband Paul of Simi Valley, California, Shirley Hint and husband Lee of Duluth, Georgia, Lola Benoit and husband John of New Columbia, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three daughters, Kavlin and twins, Carol and Carolyn Hafley; a sister, Hilda Flowers; and infant brother, James Ferling; his step-father, Frank Ferling; his parents-in-law, Joseph and Clan Crider. Delila Rogers Delila Rogers, 93, of Owensville, died Thursday, November 11, 2004, at Frene Valley Healthcare South, Owensville, Missouri. She was born on December 17, 1910, at Japan, Missouri, to John and Rosie (Cooper) Smith. On October 29, 1927 she married Allen Rogers in Union. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Owensville. Surviving her are her sons, Chester Rogers and wife Joy of Cuba, Missouri and Harold Rogers of Owensville, Missouri; four daughters, Esther Akers and husband John of Sullivan, Missouri, Mary Jane Hudson and husband Larry of Belle, Missouri, and Ruth Jost and husband Bill of Newark, Delaware. A brother William Smith and wife Roslie of St. Louis, Missouri; sisters, Bertha Weismiller and husband Ed of Kimberling City, Missouri and Elda Scott of St Louis, Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were one son, Nathan Rogers, two daughters, Beth Rogers and Martha Wilcox, two brothers, John and Jessie Smith, and three sisters Blanche Pritchard, Nell Rogers, and Sylvia Bailey. Services were held at Gottenstroeter Funeral Home, Owensville, Missouri on Monday, November 15, with Leslie Dority officiating. Burial was in the Pacific City Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville, Missouri. Elsie F. Rutz Elsie F. Rutz nee Ferris of Cuba, Missouri was born on January 16, 1911 at Oak Hill, Missouri to the union of John Franklin Ferris and Martha Ellen Simpson Ferris and passed away on November 13, 2004 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 27 days. On April 23, 1934 Elsie was united in marriage to Maurice E. Rutz. They were happily married until he preceded her in death on December 12, 1984. Elsie was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Logan, Ralph and John Ferris and seven sisters, Martha "Nell" Bayless, Dora Wacker, Fannie Tayloe, Esther Ferris, Bertha Ferris, Minnie "Sue" McIntyre and Mary Ferris. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cuba, Missouri and the Cuba Eastern Star Chapter 398. Those who survive to mourn her passing from this life are her nieces; nephews; great-nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Elsie was a devoted wife, loving sister, aunt, good friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Elsie F. Rutz nee Ferris was in state at the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri where Eastern Star services were held on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 7:30 by the Cuba Eastern Star No. 398. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at the Britton Chapel, Cuba, Missouri at 2:00 p.m. with Larry Pigg officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Cuba, Missouri. All arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home of Cuba, Missouri. Eugene A. Souders Eugene A. Souders, of Bourbon, passed away October 29, 2004 at the age of 94 years. He was born on February 8, 1910 in Oak Hill, Missouri to Ollie C. and Nellie (Simpson) Souders. After high school, Eugene attended and received a Bachelors Degree and Teaching Certificate from Rolla. He taught in one-room schoolhouses at Argo and Oak Hill. Mr. Souders was employed as Superintendent of the Bourbon School system before entering the United States Army. Only days after he married Evelyn M. Essmann, Eugene left for France where he participated in World War II and served in the European Theatre. He became life long friends with a family in France after the liberation. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he taught mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis and received a Masters in School Administration. He became a principal in the Lindburgh School District and retired from there. Eugene was an active member of the American Legion Post 81, Cuba Masonic Lodge #312, and Valley of St. Louis Orient of Missouri Shriners. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon. He is survived by three sisters, Gertrude Briggs of California, Freda Fuchs of St. Louis, Missouri and Pauline Bell of Altamont, Illinois; two nieces, Sharon Hargus of Illinois and Linda Mroz of Washington, Missouri; three nephews, David Bell of Arizona, Ronald Bell of Tennessee, Dennis Bell of Iowa, other relatives and many friends. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn and a brother, Leo M. Souders. Masonic services were conducted on Monday, November 1, 2004 at the Eaton Funeral Home Bourbon Chapel with the funeral services at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2004 from the First United Methodist Church in Bourbon with Reverend Karen Blank-Ewell officiating. Interment was in the Bourbon Cemetery with military honors and an American Legion service. All arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan.
