MO Local Obituaries for the Week of December 8, 2010 Mark Allen Brenton Mark Allen Brenton of Cuba, Missouri was born on December 23, 1957 in St. Louis, Missouri to Don and Jacqueline “Jackie” Brenton and passed away on November 30, 2010 in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of 52 years, 11 months and 7 days. Mark exhibited a flair for being truly and oddly unique. He earned degrees from East Central College, the University of Missouri at St. Louis and Linn Technical School. He was a talented carpenter and electrician and was gifted with tremendous satirical writing skills. He was a flamboyant musician who could play several instruments and loved to entertain. Mark taught high school Spanish and for two years he lived in Spain, teaching English. He also served as an interpreter for Spanish businessmen. Mark loved to garden and to be outdoors, especially camping, fishing and gigging on the Meramec River. He was preceded in death by grandparents, F.L. and Elinor Brenton and Ted and Mickey Barlows. Kathleen Joan Burch Kathleen Joan Burch, nee Housewright, was born August 19, 1937 at Keysville, Missouri to Noah and Clara (John) Housewright and passed away Saturday, November 27, 2010 at home in Vichy, Missouri at the age of 73 years. In the year 1964, she was united in married to Paul Burch who preceded her in death on February of 1976. Kathleen attended St. Andrews Catholic Church in Belle, Missouri. She was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team even when they were not winning. She attended a game every year on her birthday and would always watch the Cardinals on TV. Kathleen was also an avid reader of most any type of book. She always enjoyed going to yard sales and having her own yard sales. She was very firm in her convictions, unstoppable and a lover of life. She loved her five dogs and three cats as her little children. But most of all she loved her grandchildren with a passion. She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah and Clara Housewright; her husband, Paul; two brothers, Bob Housewright and wife Annabelle and Lee Housewright and wife Connie; and sisters, Marceline Scrivner and Rosalee Greathouse and husband Ambrose. Collier of Sullivan, Missouri was born on September 7, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri to Perle and Virginia (nee Harmon) Avery and passed away Monday, November 22, 2010 at the age of 66 years. She was a very loving person and enjoyed serving her family and friends, especially her granddaughter. She worked most of her life as a cook, recently working at the Flying J, until it closed. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Collier and husband Tarten and Fern Bryan. Dr. Jay Gordon Crump Jay Crump was born February 11, 1950 in Moberly, Missouri, to Lucian Temple and Sarah Imogene Crump and passed away November 26, 2010 at his home in Rolla, Missouri at the age of 60 years. On August 19, 1978 he married Lugene Rust, of Houston, Missouri. After going to public schools in Kirksville, Jay attended Truman State University for his pre-osteopathic training, and while at Truman, he was the President of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.   In 1976, he earned his degree as Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Andrew T. Still University. After practicing medicine briefly in the state of Washington, Dr. Crump moved to Rolla in 1981 and joined the staff of the Phelps County Regional Medical Center, where he worked in the Emergency Room and eventually became the Medical Director of Emergency Services from 1984-2009. In 1997 he took a position as VP/Chief Medical Officer at PCRMC and held this position until the time of his death. His greatest passion was the Emergency Department that he watched grow from a five-bed facility to the current 25 private rooms that it is today. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian and Sarah Crump; his father-in-law, Gene Rust and brother, Gary Allen Crump. Bernice Alline Eads Bernice Alline Eads of Cuba, Missouri was born November 7, 1922 at Leasburg, Missouri to Waldo and Geneva (nee Land) Kitchen and passed away November 26, 2010 at Cuba, Missouri at the age of 88 years and 19 days. Bernice was united in marriage to John Newton Eads at Leasburg, Missouri on March 18, 1945 and to this union three sons were born. Bernice graduated with an English Major in 1941 from the college in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She was a substitute teacher for many of the rural schools in Crawford County and then for Crawford County R-II School District before retiring in the mid 1990’s after 50+ years of teaching. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Cuba for the last 25 years and truly loved spending time with her family and friends. Earl Monroe Garms Earl Monroe Garms of Steelville, Missouri was born September 18, 1934 in Clifton, Kansas to William Henry Garms and Essie (Gates) Garms and passed away Friday, December 3, 2010 at his home at the age of 76 years. On October 22, 1956 in Steelville, Missouri, he was united in marriage to Georgia Reeves who survives of the home. Earl was a member and deacon of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was a 50-year member of the Lebanon Masonic Lodge of Steelville and an original member of the Missouri Free Trappers Association. For 11 years, Earl worked as chief deputy under Sheriff Johnny Giles. Later, he worked several years operating the Phillips 66 Service Station on Main Street. In 1998, Earl retired after 22 years with the Steelville R-3 School system as a bus driver. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish. He also was a silver- smith and made jewelry. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Essie Garms; three brothers, Fred Garms and wife Hattie, Raymond and Larry Garms. Emma Anna John Emma John of El Cajon, California, was born in Rosati, Missouri on January 22, 1925 to Silvio and Lucia (Piazza) Flaim and passed away on November 28, 2010 at the age of 85 years. On November 23, 1946 she married Thomas Earl Crowder at St. Anthony Church in Rosati, Missouri. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1973. On October 16, 1982 she married Kermit John of St. James, Missouri. He passed away on September 3, 2004. Emma resided in Missouri for 79 years prior to moving to California in 2004. She was raised in Rosati, Missouri and was the last surviving of seven siblings. She later resided in Bourbon and St. James, Missouri where she raised her family and partnered in farming operations with her husbands. She was preceded in death by her parents, Silvio and Lucia Flaim; husbands; a son, Neal Steven Crowder and son-in-law, Eugene Perry. Josephine Nowak Josephine Nowak was born on November 26, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois and passed away December 5, 2010 in Ft. Worth, Texas, where she lived the past seven years with her daughter, Donna. During her youth, Josephine lived in Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and she graduated from Peshtigo High School in 1944. She moved back to Chicago and married Clarence Nowak on May 4, 1952. Josephine lived in St. James, Missouri, for over 42 years.  She and her husband owned and managed the Country Aire and Gateway Inn Motels in St. James for many years.  She was very socially active and loved spending time with her family and friends. She loved flowers and gardening and was a member of many clubs, including the Garden Club and the Homemaker’s Club. She served as a leader in 4-H for many years.  Josephine loved traveling and visited 15 countries including China, Poland, Switzerland, Costa Rica and her family’s homeland of Russia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Genevieve and Adam; her brother, Edward, and her husband, Clarence. Martha was united in marriage to Johnnie Peterson on June 9, 1942 in San Francisco, California. Martha was a homemaker and was a member of the Cuba Free Will Baptist Church. The most important thing to her was taking care of her family especially her children and grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Adeline Roehl Riffel Adeline Roehl Riffel was born in Forbes, North Dakota, on March 25, 1928, to Fredrick and Lydia (Boepple) Roehl and passed away May 22, 2010, at her home in Spokane, Washington. She grew up in Dighton, Kansas, as one of their 17 children.  She graduated from Enterprise Academy in Enterprise, Kansas, in 1946, and attended Walla Walla College in Walla Walla, Washington, for the equivalent of three years, also teaching school for three years, before marrying Gordon Riffel on June 12, 1952. Gordon and Adeline lived in the Bourbon-Sullivan, Missouri area for nearly 40 years where they raised five children, while Gordon served as the family doctor to much of the surrounding area.  Adeline was a busy homemaker who also served as Gordon’s office and payroll manager. She faithfully discharged many varied responsibilities in the Bourbon Seventh-day Adventist church and school, as well. They retired in 1998, moving to Spokane, Washington.  Back “home” in their beloved Pacific Northwest, they focused on time with their beloved family. She was a godly woman of faith and integrity, leaving an amazing legacy of what it means to live an unselfish life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrick and Lydia Roehl; four sisters; six brothers; one son, Steven Edward Riffel and a granddaughter, Angela. Uhl Sr. of DeSoto, Missouri, formerly of Cuba, Missouri, was born December 4, 1926 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Pice L. and Pearl (Rich) Uhl and passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Everett was a foreman for General Motors until his retirement and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
