He served his country in the Army. Raymond lived all his life on a farm. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen Roman Bassford; one sister, Doris Jean Spavale; two sisters-in-law, Mary Lou and Mary Bassford; and one brother-in-law, Ronald Brown.He is survived by three brothers, Robert C. Everett Earl Briggs II Everett Earl Briggs II of Cuba, Missouri was born August 22, 1933 at Alton, Illinois to Everett and Ann (nee Tayon) Briggs and passed away Friday, December 5 2014 at the age of 81 years. Everett served in the U.S. Army from December 1953 to November 1955. Everett earned the Nation Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Everett married Myra A. Grob on February 1, 1953 in Ferguson, Missouri and to this union three children were born. He retired in 1998 from Carden Machine Shop in Sullivan, Missouri as the manager after 30+ years of dedicated service. Everett was a member and former Commander of the Cuba VFW Post #7147, Cuba Masonic Lodge #312 A.F. & A. M., Cuba American Legion Post, former Cuba Optimist Club and he attended church at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Cuba, Missouri. Everett spent hours outside taking care of his perfectly manicured yard and lake. He enjoyed feeding the birds, deer and would walk up to the lake, call his fish and they would all come to the surface to be fed. In his younger years Everett enjoyed bowling, playing baseball and he received a scholarship for his wrestling skills. In December of 1963, she married Jesse Carrol.Barbara was very committed to her community and involved in many areas such as a former Steelville Library board member before, during and after former Odd Fellows building was remodeled for library; 4-H leader; Treasurer, President and service chairman of American Cancer Society of Crawford County; Secretary and President of three women's clubs; member of the Crawford County Welfare Commission; board member for over nine years serving as secretary of the Steelville Community Services, Inc.; secretary of Steelville Medical services, Inc.; Treasurer of the Steelville High School Alumni Assn.; Ticket Chairman of the Christian Women's Club, Washington, MO; Treasurer of the Steelville Historical Society; Elder of the Steelville Presbyterian Church and held various offices and as committee member within the church; and member and secretary of the Community Childcare Center before, during and after building of facility at Steelville Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of the Martha Mary Chapter 364 Eastern Star and received her 50 year pin in 1987. Mabel Maleece Gahr Mabel Maleece Baker Gahr was born on January 25, 1924, in Potosi, Missouri to Nick and Olive (nee Pinnell) Baker and passed away on December 2, 2014 at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 7 days. Mabel was a life-long teacher having taught elementary music, band and choral music in St. Clair, Pacific, Fredericktown, and St. James, Missouri, where she spent the marjority of her career and ultimately retired. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education at Central Methodist College in Fayette, MIssouri. During the course of her expansive career, Mabel was highly recognized as an innovator and producer in the field of choral music in Missouri. She sat on the Missouri Activities Association Board of Directors, and in 1991, Mabel received the Luther T. Spayde Missouri Choral Director of the Year Award - the highest honor given by the Missouri Choral Directors Association. She was devoted to her students and they were devoted to her as evidenced by the highly successful choral program in St. James under her tutelage. Her passion was music and enjoyed teaching children and adults alike to enjoy and excel at it. After her retirement from public schools, Mabel took on the task of starting the first ever traveling show choir at The University of Missouri at Rolla. She also taught music classes at East Central Junior College in Union. Mabel was a devout Christian and always active in her church music programs. She was the long-time organist and choir director at the First Church of God in St. James and was very active in the children's music program at Kings Way United Methodist Church while living in Springfield, Missouri. She was raised in St. Louis for a time but lived the majority of her life in the Sullivan, Missouri area. On July 25, 1940 she married Amos Griffith and to this marriage nine children were born. Evelyn was employed for a time at the former Midwest Shoe Company in Sullivan, Missouri working as a Laster. Later in life she was a greeter at Wal-Mart in Sullivan. She loved to square dance and enjoyed baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and in her younger days, Evelyn played softball on organized teams. Her church was a large part of her life also. She taught Bible studies and vacation Bible school and was a member of True Vine Baptist Church of Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Orvil and Maggie Franklin; husband, Amos on February 4, 1982; a son, Billy Griffith; great grandson, Dakota; two great granddaughters, Melisa and Leann; son-in-law, Wallie Mesey; daughter-in-law, Mariann Griffith; two brothers, Carl and Bill Franklin; and two sisters, Margaret Webb and Ruth McClellan. Meremac, St. James, Missouri on December 20 at 2 p.m. Paul Leon Mesplay Paul Leon Mesplay was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 26, 1933 to Charles Harvey and Myrtle (Harris) Mesplay and passed away Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the age of 81 years. Paul was a class of 1951 graduate of Rolla High School. In December of that same year he met Lena Scharlene Booker and the two were united in marriage on March 2, 1952. In October of 1952 he went to work for the Rolla Post Office, where he would spend the next 35 years before he retired August 26, 1988. Paul loved baseball and softball, he played shortstop during his high school years; he also played baseball for the Salem Monarchs, and many Rolla City leagues. In 1951 Paul was given an opportunity to go to Detroit for a try out, although he was unable to attend, it was always a great joy to Paul to know that he was asked. Paul also loved to hunt, fish and travel; he was fortunate that he had traveled to all the lower 48 states and was able to fish while there. In 1988 he went to Maine for a month and fished everyday he was there. He enjoyed the outdoors and mushroom hunting. He lived life to the fullest, his love of the outdoors, his farm, the cattle and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Myrtle Mesplay; and an infant sister. Scantlan of Sullivan, Missouri was born at Leasburg, Missouri on December 17, 1936 to George Albert and Nina Mae (Kitchen) Scantlan and passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at the age of 77 years, 11 months, and 24 days. He was raised in Leasburg and as a young man was ordained as a Pastor. George attended Southwest Baptist University at Bolivar, Missouri and later studied at Oklahoma Baptist University at Shawnee, Oklahoma. He taught there for a time before furthering his education at Southern Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky where he received his Masters of Theology Degree. While in Seminary, he pastored Friendship Baptist Church in Philpot, Kentucky. After his graduation, George pastored several churches. George later was pastor at Elgin Baptist Church of Elgin, Oregon and later pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Jefferson City, Missouri. On October 20, 1956 he married Betty Pinnell at Leasburg, Missouri. In 2003, he and his wife Betty moved to Sullivan, Missouri where he maintained a nursing home ministry. George wrote poetry and songs, many of which are published. He enjoyed running and fishing and the outdoors. David served his country by enlisting into the United States Army in March of 1942 and was honorably discharged in November 1945. Snelson of Cook Station, Missouri was born in Crestwood, Missouri on August 28, 1940 to Ervin and Helen (Lenox) Snelson and passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the age of 74 years. Alvin was united in marriage to Linda Yem in June of 1957, this union was blessed with four children. Al and Linda shared 39 years before her passing in 1995. Al was able to purchase the family farm in 1990 and his love of farm life took off. He started out with a couple of registered Black Angus heifers, added some registered Simmental cattle along the way, at his death his herd was now over 100 head. Al also enjoyed going to auctions, deer hunting and going out to eat. His family recalls that Al was always the first, and sometimes the only one that was able to get a deer during deer season.
