John “Bud” Lea
John “Bud” Lea, age 84, of Steelville, Missouri, was
born Sunday, March 19, 1922 in Steelville, Missouri, the son of Ross
and Opal (Clonts) Lea and passed away Sunday, December 10, 2006 at
Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan, Missouri.
On April 26, 1972 Bud was united in marriage to Dottie
Marie Badendieck in Steelville, Missouri.
He had driven a stock truck for several years for his
dad. Later he was part owner in the Meramec Realty. After selling
his interest he worked for Hack and Bill at the Lea Feed Store. Bud
had many hobbies; he was especially proud of his bowling, fishing
and hunting abilities. He enjoyed making his plastic helgamites for
fishing and his own turkey calls, which he was proud of. He liked
the time spent with Pete and friends playing golf and being
outdoors. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Dottie, of
the home; a special family, Curtis Hayes and family; a very special
little friend, Abigail Hayes; three brothers, Pete Lea and wife
Bonnie, Bill Lea and wife Dormalie and Hack Lea and wife Vernice,
all of Steelville, Missouri; two sisters, Matred Kehner and Shirley
Mager; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Bud Lea were held Wednesday,
December 13, 2006 in the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home with the Revs.
Jerry Beers and Kevin Farr officiating. Special music of “In the
Garden” was sung by Sheila Floyd with Delores Bell accompanying.
Closing the service was a reading of “I Did It My Way” by Sheila
Floyd.
Committal prayers and burial was in the Steelville
Cemetery with Billy Lea, Rusty Lea, Larry Shearrer, Joe Lea, Curtis
Hayes and Treff Earney serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket
bearers were John Lea, C.A. Counts, James Hayes and Jimmy Harmon.
The family was served by the Britton-Bennett Funeral
Home of Steelville, Missouri.
Clyde Bascom Mathis
Clyde Bascom Mathis of Cuba, Missouri was born to the
union of the late John C. and Winnefred (Jack) Mathis on July 15, 1915
in Ionia, Michigan and passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2006
at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 29 days.
He was united in marriage to Irene Humski on January 9,
1937 and together they shared 69 years of marriage.
Clyde retired form Meramec Mine Company as an
electrician, was a parishioner at Holy Cross Catholic Church, he
proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy and
was a member of the American Legion Post.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John C. and
Winnefred (Jack) Mathis and one sister, Shirley Lindberg.
Those who are left to mourn his passing are his wife of
69 years Irene Mathis (nee Humski) of Cuba, Missouri; niece Pat
Palmer of Topeka, Kansas; neighbor and friends Joyce and Phinis
Deardeuff; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held Thursday, December 14, 2006 from 4-6
p.m. at Britton Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri.
Funeral service was Friday, December 15, 2006 at 10 a.m.
at Britton Funeral Home in Cuba, Missouri with Father James Finder,
officiating.
Interment in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Cuba,
Missouri.
Gladys Nieman
Gladys Melinda Nieman, 85, of Pocahontas, Arkansas,
passed away Friday, December 8, 2006 at Randolph County Nursing Home
in Pocahontas, Arkansas.
Gladys was born November 13, 1921 in Gasconade County to
the late Burt and Ethel Dotson Miller. She married Sylvester Nieman
on February 23, 1941 in Cuba. She was a former member of St. Paul’s
Lutheran in Cuba, Missouri and a current member of Skaggs Church of
Christ in Pocahontas, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester and
a sister, Alice Ferling.
Surviving her are a son, Sylvan Nieman and wife Sharon
of Pocahontas, Arkansas; brother, Allen Miller and wife Shirley of
Texas; four sisters, Loretta Spurgeon of Belle, Missouri, Ivy
Westholz and husband Walter and Joy Rogers and husband Chester, all
of Cuba, Missouri and Faith Moore and husband Joe of Texas; two
grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at
Gottenstroeter Funeral Home in Owensville with Pastor Randy Carr
officiating. Interment was in Countryside Memorial Gardens in
Owensville.
Rev. Carl Vernon Taylor
Carl Vernon Taylor of Cuba, Missouri, formerly of
Stanton, Missouri, was born on Thursday, March 21, 1929 in Schram
City, Illinois to Roy Taylor and Delphia Garrison Taylor. He passed
away at Cuba Manor on Friday, December 8, 2006 at the age of 77
years, 8 months and 17 days.
Carl married Alice Brown on April 15, 1950 at Third
Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked as a painter for
many years. He pastured several churches in Missouri. Those in the
area were Collins Mission in St. James, Missouri, Mt. Olive in
Leasburg, Missouri, Baptist Chapel Mission, Steelville and Fairview
Baptist Church, Butts, Missouri.
After retirement he became a member of First Baptist
Church, Stanton, Missouri. He enjoyed scrapbooking, calendar
journaling, hunting squirrel and spending time with children,
especially his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Alice;
brother, Kenneth Taylor and sister, Mary Alice Back.
He is survived by a brother, James Allen Taylor and wife
Shirley of Georgia; half sister, Karen Back Simmons and husband Gary
and half brother, John Lee Back, all of Mt. Vernon, Illinois;
special niece, Kay Worley and husband Ed of Cuba, Missouri; other
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation was Monday, December 11, 2006 from 6-8 p.m.
at the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Funeral services were Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at 11
a.m. at the Hutson Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri with Rev.
Harry Pryor officiating.
Music selections were, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,”
“When the Roll is Called Up Yonder,” and “When we all Get to
Heaven,” sung by Helen Carden and Peggy Hamann.
Burial was in the Brown Cemetery, Steelville, Missouri
with pallbearers, John Back, Gary Simmons, Bob Brown, Dave Cornick,
Roger Brown and Ed Worley.
All arrangements were under the direction of the Hutson
Funeral Home, Steelville, Missouri.
Thelma May Vance
Thelma May Vance was born October 3, 1904 in Oregon to
Robert Julian and Minnie (Bryant) Julian and passed away December 8,
2006 at Rolla, Missouri at the age of 102 years.
Thelma attended Seymour High School and graduated in
three years. She enrolled in the Teachers College at Springfield
that summer in a Teachers Education Program. She taught children in
the first eight grades in a rural school for seven months. She
taught at Teagues School for two years and at Slack School one year
to save enough money so she could enroll at Southwest Baptist
College, which was a two-year college at the time. Both Teagues
School and Slack School were one-room elementary schools.
She continued to teach school for two more years at
Mountain Dale School. In May 1929 she quit to prepare for her
wedding with Isaac Newton Vance on October 12, 1929. To this union
two sons were born, Lawrence Wayland and Clayton Vance.
Thelma then taught at Victor Elementary School, Republic
School and Hannibal School District. She found a teaching position
at the Rolla School District in 1958, which she taught a total of 12
years spending all these years teaching sixth grade students at
Benton School. Her teaching experience included a total of 31 years
in public schools in Missouri. She retired in 1970.
After her retirement she taught the ABE program, a GED
instruction preparation program, at the Rolla High School for an
additional 11 years.
When Thelma was not teaching school she was always
willing to teach Sunday school and bible school. Her husband passed
away in 1983, but she continued to teach Sunday school until 1991,
when she was 87 years old. She also played the piano on many
occasions.
She is survived by a son, Clayton Vance, Rolla,
Missouri; six grandchildren, Norman Vance and wife Ruth of Hermann,
Missouri, Alan Vance and wife Maryann of New Haven, Missouri, Scott
Vance and wife Tracy of New Haven, Missouri, Terry Vance and wife
Debbie of Washington, Missouri, David Vance of Jefferson City,
Missouri and Elaine Clayton and husband Danny of Harrisburg,
Illinois.
Fourteen great grandchildren and was to soon have a
great great grandchild from Matt and Rachyl Rister in January;
nieces, nephews, and friends.
Visitation was Tuesday, December 12, 2006 from 6-8 p.m.
at the James & Gahr Chapel, Rolla, Missouri.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 13,
2006 at 10 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church in Rolla, Missouri with
Leslie (Butch) Koerber officiating.
Music was provided by Marsha Nixon and Carol Blackwell.
Pallbearers were grandsons.
Interment was in the Ozark Memorial Gardens Cemetery in
Rolla, Missouri.
All arrangements were under the direction of the James &
Gahr Mortuary in St. James and Rolla, Missouri.
