Beloved husband of Cora Coffman and dear father of Fred and Elby J.Coffman and Neoma Blackwell; dear brother of Edward and Lester Coffman, Mrs. Alice Wymer, Mrs. Minnie Taylor, Mrs. Martha Harmon, and Mrs. Anna Smith; dear grandfather and great-grandfather. Services at 2:30 p.m Saturday, May 27, at MERCER FUNERAL HOME 1416 Niedringhaus Avenue. Interment at St. John's Cemetery. Granite City Press-Record ..May 26, 1961 pg.12 Granite City Traffic Fatality A Granite City Steel worker yesterday was charged with homicide and leaving the scene of an accident in the death of an elderly pedestrian killed by an auto Wednesday. The warrants naming Roy Hughes, 53, a steel plant laborer of 2516 Circle Drive, Granite City, were issued by Police Magistrate Andrew Gasparovic Victim of the accident was William Coffman, 84, of Granite City. He was found lying in a tavern driveway several hours after being injured Police said Coffman died of head and internal injuries, apparently suffered when struck by an auto backing off the tavern parking lot. The driver of the auto fled. Hughes' bond was set at $7000, Police said he admitted to being on the tavern lot Wednesday but said he did not recall an accident. G.C.Press-Record..May 29, 1961..pg2..col. 3 Cart Did Not Belong To Accident Victim The family of William I. Coffman, 83, of 2104 Bryan avenue, who was killed last Wednesday morning when apparently struck by an automobile on a lot in the 2000 block of Illinois avenue, informed the Press-Record, that he was not the owner of the junk cart pictured in last Thursday's issue. Coffman, who was suffering from cancer and had undergone several operations, was unable to work, the famiy said. He was a retired laborer at Union Starch & Refining Co., where he was employed 34 years. Released on $7000 bond late Thursday afternoon was Roy Hughes, 53, of 2516 Circle drive, who Granite City police charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. Hughes is to appear for a preliminary hearing before Police Magistrate Gasparovic two days after an inquest is held. Deputy Coroner Henry Pieper said a date has not been set for the inquest, but he is planning to conduct it this week.
