WALTER FRANKLIN SHARP Walter Franklin Sharp, age 37, who had just completed 20 years of service in the United States Navy and was on his way home, was killed in an auto accident at Lincoln, ILL. Sharp, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David Franklin Sharp of Cuba, was traveling alone in his own car. He reached a long stretch of road ten miles south of Lincoln near the little town of Elkart, Illinois, on Route 66. It was snowing at 6:15 Thursday evening Feb. 28, 1963 when the driver of a tractor-trailer felt a slight thud at the rear of his vehicle. Mr. Sharp's car had hit the rear of the trailer and was dragged 800 feet before the driver realized what had happened. Mr. Sharp served 20 years, and had received his discharge at 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning. His commanding officer wrote the family that Walter was an outstanding petty officer, reflecting the highest qualities of leadership and proficiency in his specialty. He exemplified every characteristic identified with a good shipmate and a dedicated citizen worthy of his American heritage. Mr. Sharp is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Sharp, sisters, Mrs.Geneva Hartman of Jennings, MO., Mrs. Bernice Martin of Alton, ILL., Mrs. Beulah Travers of Anaheim, CA., Mrs. Violet Limbaugh of St. Louis;, Eugene Long of Seoul, Korea;, Paul E. Sharp of St. Louis, MO., and LeRoy Sharp of Anaheim, CA. as well as many other relatives. Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, 1963 at the Shanklin Funeral Home Chapel in Cuba with Rev. J. R. Stogsdill officiating. Military honors were under the auspices of the United States Naval District, Great Lakes, ILL. Interment in the Kinder Cemetery
