Birdsall & Dean (1882), p. 794 ISAAC GIVENS Isaac Givens is the son of Merrit Givens, one of the early settlers of Daviess County, born in 1817, and a resident of the county up to the time of his tragic death by accidental shooting, while attempting to arrest a prisoner, in 1862. Isaac Givens was born in Daviess County, Missouri, November 7, 1847, where he remained, working on a farm and attending school until he was eighteen years old. In 1862 he was enrolled in the home guards and while not in active service, was ready for duty during the war. In 1872 Mr. Givens purchased a farm in Sheridan Township, where he is now living, giving his attention principally to agricultural pursuits. In 1876 he visited Georgetown, Colorado, and was enjaged in mining during the year. He was married, February 2, 1865, to Miss Elizabeth J. Johnson, daughter of James and Sarah Carter Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Givens have had four children, only one of whom is living, Charles N. Additional Comments: Issac Givens' four children from his first wife, Elizabeth, died at a young age. Two of them are buried in the Wooderson Cem. in Daviess Co., next to their father. Isaac's wife Elizabeth had TB, and the reason they went to Colo. as stated above was for her health, hoping she would improve, but she didn't and died young, and Isaac re-married Katie Estella Roseberry (who was 18 years younger then he was) on the 25 Dec. 1890 in Sullivan Co., Mo. He had four children by Katie. They were Dora E. Givens, died in infancy from brain damage, and she is also buried at the Wooderson Cem., next to the children from his first wife; Cora Myrtle Givens; Effie Cecil Givens; and Virgil Ernest Givens. Isaac and Katie also adopted a daughter Maude Calhoon Givens who was related to his 2nd wife, Katie, through her mother Rebecca Calhoon Roseberry. Maude was born into the Robert O. Calhoon family of Daviess Co., Mo. Robert O. Calhoon was Katie's Uncle, brother to her mother Rebecca Roseberry. Family tradition held Maude was born to one of Robert O. Calhoon's children, but no one knew for sure which one for certain. Maude never talked about her family history even to her own children. Only Maude's siblings named above and Isaac and Katie knew of her adoption. The rest of the family found out about it after Maude's death.
