All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/mo/mofiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Brenda Abplanalp brendaab@grm.net November 1, 2005, 2:01 pm Declaration Of A Widow For Pension Declaration of a Widow for Pension or for Increase in Pension State of Missouri County of Daviess On this 19th day of October, A.D., one thousand eight hundred and seventy- eight personally appeared before me a Clerk of the County Court the same being a Court of Record within and for the county and State aforesaid Nancy Givens aged 59 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declarations in order to obtain the pension provided by Acts of Congress granting pensions to widows: That she is the widow of Merritt Givens who enlisted under the name of Merritt Givens at Gallatin, Mo., on the---day of May 1862 in the 33rd Regiment of Enrolled Missouri Militia on the war of Rebellion, who was killed while on duty on the 8th day of June 1864, A.D. who bore at the time of his death the rank of Captain in 33rd Regiment E.M.M. that she was married under the name of Nancy Allen to said Merritt Givens aforesaid on the 10th day of January, A.D. 1839 by William Covington at Daviess Co., Mo., there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that neither she nor her husband had been previously married that she has to the present date remained his widow; that the following are the names and dates of birth of all his legitimate children yet surving who were under sixteen years of age at the father's death, to wit: Richard, of soldier by Nancy Givens, born Sept. 18th, 1852 Merritt, of soldier by Nancy Givens, born Feb. 4th, 1856 John, of soldier by Nancy Givens, born Mar. 10th, 1859 Mary Ellen, of soldier by Nancy Givens, born Feb. 7th, 1861 Martha A., of soldier, by Nancy Givens, born June 14th, 1863 That she has not abandoned the support of anyone of his children, but that they are still under her care or maintenance except Richard who died in 1868, John who died in 1875, and Mary Ellen who died in 1875 that she has not in any manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the rebellion in the United States; that a prior application has been filed by her for pension but was abandoned; for some cause unknown pension was not allowed; that she hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, WM. F. CUMMINGS & CO., of WASHINGTON, D.C., her attorneys to prosecute her claim; that her residence is Daviess Co., Mo., and that her post office address is Kidder, Caldwell Co., Mo. her Attest: Joseph I. Wooderson Nancy x Givens Daniel P. Doll mark Additional Comments: Nancy Givens had to file several times for her widows pension due to various complications in the process. There are numerous records in her pension file not described here. She did finally receive a pension. The two people who attested to this pension record were as mentioned above: Joseph I. Wooderson and Daniel P. Doll. Joseph I. Wooderson was Nancy's half-brother and Daniel P. Doll was her son-in-law, husband to her daughter Sebrina. There were several older children besides the minor ones mentioned above. They included Sebrina (wife of Daniel P. Doll), William (a Civil War soldier also who died of disease), Harriet (wife of Robert Creekmore, George F. Curtis, and D.B. Manville), Isaac, and Eliza (wife of Elisha Creekmore, Jr.).
