Biographical Sketch of Asa H. Bain is considered one of the successful farmers of Dent County, MO., and although born in Maury County, Tenn., was reared and educated in Dent County, MO. He was born on the 1st of August, 1841, and is the seventh of ten children born to the marriage of Frederick Bain and Susannah Andrews, and is a grandson of William Bain. The latter was of Scotch descent, and lived and died in North Carolina, the latter event taking place at the age of one hundred and two years. Frederick Bain was born in the "Old North State" March 26, 1809, and died in the State of Arkansas in 1859, having been a Southern trader in horses and mules. His wife was also born in North Carolina (1808), and died at the home of her son Asa, in September, 1875. She was of Scotch-Irish descent, and was married in 1828, and became the mother of ten children, nine of whom are living. On October 7, 1875, Asa H. Bain was married to Miss Mary M. Craig, who was born in Dent County, MO., April 19, 1853. She is a daughter of James E. and Edith Craig, and is the mother of four children: James F., H. Asbury, Susannah C., and Mary S. In July, 1861 Mr. Bain enlisted in Company D, Tenth Missouri Infantry, under E. Kirby Smith, Parson's brigade, Price's division, Confederate States Army, and served until June, 1865, being a participant in the battles of Spring- field, Prairie Grove and Helena. In the last engagement he received two wounds. After the close of the war he returned to his farm of 165 acres in Missouri, and has since been actively engaged in tilling the soil. His land is well improved, and is furnished with a good orchard and buildings. He served two years as constable of Current Township, and was president of the County Wheel one term.
