Biographical Sketch of Millard F. Browne, local manager of Plank Iron Bank, for Dent Iron Company, and postmaster of Eden Post office, also general merchant at the bank, whose annual sales equal about $10,000 established the store July 6, 1882, under the title of Sankey & Browne, and since about 1885 Mr. Browne has been sole owner and proprietor. He has also been manager of the iron bank since November, 1887. He was born in Washington County, MO., October 11, 1855, being the son of Rev. Solomon and Mary Ann (Love) Browne, Rev. Solomon was born in Virginia in 1799, Mary Ann in Missouri in 1819. They were married in Reynolds County, MO, in 1842, and settled in Washington County, where he lived until 1873, when he moved to Salem. He died there February 18, 1888, at the age of eighty-nine. He was a Cumberland Presbyterian minister for nearly forty years, and delivered his last sermon a few months before he died. He was married three times, the subject's mother being his last wife. He was the father of twenty-one children, five by his first wife, seven by the second and nine by the last. He lived in Missouri for nearly sixty years; was a very prominent divine, and became well known throughout Southeast Missouri. His father was a Scotchman, a Revolutionary soldier, and died in Kentucky. Mrs. Mary Ann (Love) Browne died in Salem in September, 1877, and was first a member of the Baptist Church, but afterward joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Her father, Judge William C. Love, was an early settler in Reynolds County, and is now living in Iron County, nearly one hundred years old. He was a farmer by occupation, was in the Mexican War, and was presiding judge of Reynolds County Court for many years. Millard F. Browne was the sixth of nine children, and received his education in the common country schools, and his parents afterward moved to Salem, where he attended the schools there for two years, giving Prof. Linch his note at 10 per cent., which he paid with money earned afterward. He taught two terms of school, one during vacation and one after finishing school. He then began as weighmaster for Dent Iron Company, in Phelps County, and about twelve months after he was made manager of the Clinton Bank, in Phelps County, where he remained until he came to Plank Bank, and where he assumed the duties as above stated. He was married April 30, 1882, to Miss Maggie Ann McGinnis, daughter of Hugh and Mary McGinnis, natives of Ireland, who came to the United States when young. The father died in Crawford County, but the mother is still living. To Mr. and Mrs. Browne were born three children. Mr. Browne is a member of the A.O.U.W., a member of the Masonic fraternity, the I.O.O.F., and has been postmaster of Eden for the past fifteen months. He is a Democrat in his political views, and his first presidential vote was cast for S.J.
