Biographical Sketch of Christopher C. Cox, Dent County, Missouri

Christopher C. Cox, a native of Tennessee, born March 5, 1843, is the
son of Nicholas and Eliza (Birlew) Cox; the former's birth place is
unknown, but he was of Scotch-Dutch descent, a farmer by occupation,
and died in Laclede County, MO., while on his way to Texas.  His wife
was born in South Carolina in 1822, and died June 15, 1887, in Maries
County, MO., having borne a family of eleven children; seven grew to
maturity, and Christopher C. is the fifth of the family.  When he was
two years of age his parents immigrated to Missouri, and he continued 
to reside with his mother until 1863, when he enlisted in Company L,
First Regiment Light Artillery.  In July, 1865, he came to Maries 
County, MO., and February 8, 1887, was married to Josephine Callahan,
widow of Thomas Callahan.  She was born in Smithville, Lawrence County,
Ark., in 1847, and by her first husband became the mother of one child.
Mr. and Mrs. Cox are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, 
and he is a Democrat, and belongs to the I.O.O.F.  After coming to Dent
County, MO., in 1873, he worked in a tobacco factory in Salem for about
four years, and three years later located on the farm of 200 acres
where he now resides.  His wife has 240 acres of land.  Mrs. Cox's
parents, Green and Elizabeth Woods, were of Scotch-Irish and English
descent, respectively, and the former was a presiding elder in the
Methodist Episcopal Church South.  They were born on the same day in
the year, the father's birth occuring in Washington County, MO., in 
1814, and the latter's in Franklin County, GA., in 1814.
