Biographical Sketch of John L. Skeeters, Dent County, Missouri >From "History of Laclede, Camden, Dallas, Webster, Wright, Texas, Pulaski, Phelps and Dent Counties, Missouri" The Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889. ********************************************************************** John L. Skeeters is a farmer of Dent County, Mo., and was born in East Tennessee in 1820, being a son of William and Mary (Legg) Skeeters, who were born in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1791 and 1800, and died in Texas and Alabama in 1883 and 1845, respectively. The father was a farmer and carpenter by trade, and came to Missouri from Alabama in 1871, but from 1880 until his death resided in the "Lone Star State." John L. Skeeters was the second of their twelve children, and resided with his parents until he attained his majority, receiving his education in the country schools, and then came to Missouri, but a year later returned to Alabama. In 1849 he was married to Miss Susan McCoren, who was born in that State in 1831, and is a daughter of Isaac and Rebecca McCoren. To them were born ten children, six of whom are living: William I., Elizabeth (wife of Joe Nelson), Samuel W., Martha C. (wife of Henry Duckworth), Vickie (wife of William Tune) and Dora. In 1852 Mr. Skeet- ers removed from Alabama to Missouri, and entered forty acres of land in Dent County, which he has since increased to 750 acres, with 175 acres under cultivation, well improved with good buildings and orchard. He is a Democrat in politics, and about 1854 was elected justice of the peace, in which capacity he served twelve years, and was afterward elected again, and served four years, filling the duties of that office in a very creditable manner. He and wife are worthy members of the Baptist Church. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
