Biographical Sketch of Addison H. Brown, Franklin County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** Addison H. Brown, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Boles Town- ship, Franklin County, was born in Circleville, Westmoreland Co., Penn. March 28, 1839, and is the eldest of nine children born to John and Margaret (Metraffey) Brown, also natives of Westmoreland County, Penn., and of Scotch-Irish descent. John Brown, who served fifteen years as justice of the peace in his native county, was a son of Henry and Eliza (Harkness) Brown. Two of Mr. Brown's sons were educated for the Pres- byterian ministry, and one of them, Rev. David Brown, is preaching at Newton, Iowa. Addison H. Brown was reared in Circleville until his thirteenth year, when he removed to a farm with his parents. He recei- ved an academical education, and engaged in teaching school until twenty-four years of age. In 1863 he was married to Mary J. Gaut, a native of Pennsylvania. He taught school during the winter months, and farmed during the summer, until 1880, when he engaged in merchandising in Wall, near Pittsburgh, four years, since which time he has followed farming. He owns 185 acres of well-improved land near Pacific, as well as town lots and coal land in Pennsylvania. Mr. Brown removed to Franklin County, Mo., in 1865, where his wife died in 1877. In 1880 Mr. Brown returned to Pennsylvania, and in July of that year was marr- ied to Mrs. Matilda Linhart, nee Umbarger. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are members of the Presbyterian Church, of which the former is clerk of sessions and trustee. He is a Republican in politics, and while resid- ing in Pennsylvania served three years as justice of the peace. During the late war he served in the Pennsylvania State Militia.
