Biographical Sketch of Joseph Eckert, Franklin County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** Joseph Eckert, a leading citizen of Franklin County, Mo., and ex- surveyor of that county, was born in Baden, Germany, October 16, 1855, and is the son of Joseph and Josephine (Krol) Eckert. The father was born in Switzerland about 1824, and died in 1857 from disease contracted while in prison at Rastadt, where he was con- fined as a prisoner of war during the German Revolution, in 1848. The mother was born in France in 1837, and is now a resident of Baden. Our subject immigrated to America in the spring of 1872, and located in Franklin County, in 1876. He began civil engineer- ing in 1879, and in 1880 was elected, as a Democrat, to the office of surveyor of Franklin County, and held that position for four years. He then returned to his profession as civil engineer, and is engaged at that at the present time. In 1878 he married Miss Maggie Tremmel, a native of Union Township, Franklin Co., Mo., born in 1862, and the daughter of George and Barbara Tremmel. To this union four children have been born.
