Biographical Sketch of Henry C. Hollmann, Franklin County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** Henry C. Hollmann, brick manufacturer of Washington, was born in Westphalia, Germany, in 1832, and is the son of Franz and Elizabeth (born Linnert) Hollmann, both natives of Germany, and bothborn in the year 1804. Franz was a farmer by occupation. He emigrated to the United States in 1848 and located in Warrenton, Warren Co., Mo., where he died in 1886. His wife died in 1871. Of the six children born to their marriage, Henry C. was the eldest. At the age of sixteen he emigrated to America, and remained on the farm until twenty years of age. In 1853 he came to Washington and hired out in a brickyard, but in 1861 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Catherine Dickmann, nee Schulte, who was the daughter of Henry Schulte. She was born in Germany in 1825, and came to the United States in 1844. To Mr. and Mrs. Hollmann were born two children: Charles and Annie. Mrs. Hollmann had six children by the first marriage, viz.: Kate (wife of George W. Davis), Henry, William, August and Mary (wife of William Thias). The same year of his marriage Mr. Hollmann began the manufacture of brick on his own responsibility, and this he has since continued. He has made on an average 500,000 per year, making in all about 13,000,000, receiving for the same about $200,000. The largest number made in any one year was 800,000 and the least 320,000. The brick-yard which he now owns was established in 1850, and bricks have been made each year.
