Biographical Sketch of Frank Stumpe, Franklin County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** Frank Stumpe, brick maker of Washington, is the son of Henry and Katie (Bruner) Stumpe, both of whom were natives of Germany, and in the year 1852 they immigrated to America and came to Washington, Mo. He died in 1861 and his wife in 1866. Of their family of nine children Frank was the eighth. He was reared on the farm and came to America when nineteen years of age. The first year he worked in St. Louis and in Illinois, and in 1854 came to Washington, Mo., where for several years he worked as a day laborer in a brickyard. In 1862 he commenced the manufacture of brick upon his own responsibility, and has since con- tinued the same with the exception of the year 1886. He has made on average of 400,000 per annum, making in all 10,000,000 of brick, and receiving for the same $60,000. The largest number any one year was 700,000 and the least, 140,000. In 1856 he married Miss Caroline Dreinherber, a native of Germany, born in 1838, and to them were born seven children, viz.: Minnie, Henry, William, Frank, Fritz, August and Ernest. Mrs. Stumpe died in 1883, and in 1884 he married Mrs. Mary Walkenhorst, nee Rade, daughter of Peter Rade. Mrs. Stumpe was born in Germany in 1833, and came to America when twelve years of age. Five children were born to her first marriage: Charlotta, wife of Henry Wefenstelle; Henry, Fred, August and Katie.
