Biographical Sketch of J. F. Whitson, Franklin County, Missouri >From "History of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties", Biographical Appendix, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1888. ********************************************************************** J. F. Whitson, a young and enterprising citizen of Union, and present recorder of Franklin County, was born in Union, Franklin Co., Mo., June 15, 1860, the son of John and A. J. (Maupin) Whitson. The father was born in Virginia, January 1, 1829. He was a mechanic, and later in life was engaged in the livery business at Union. His death occurred June 29, 1870. The mother was born in Franklin County, Mo., December 5, 1825 and is now a resident of Union. Our subject was reared in the town of his birth, and received a good education in the schools of the same. He entered the probate court in 1880 as clerk for Judge Bolte, and continued in that capacity for six years, during which time he per- formed clerical duty in the office of the circuit court. In November, 1886, he was elected on the Democratic ticket to the office of recorder of Franklin County, and received a majority of 632 votes, notwithstand- ing the county has a Republican majority of about 600, which was a decided compliment to him.
