Hinkley, Gentry County, Missouri >From "History of Gentry and Worth Counties", Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar, St. Joseph, Mo.: National Historical Company, 1882. ********************************************************************** Judge Calvin B. Hinkley. The subject of this sketch is the son of Josiah and Abigail Hinkley, of Summit County, Maine, where he was born, September 20, 1837. He entered Colby University, in his native state, in 1858, but like thousands of young men all over the land who are actuated by patriotic impulses, he left the University before graduat- ing and enlisted in the Army of the Potomac, where he served as captain in the Nineteenth Maine Infantry. From the time he entered the army (1863) he was actively engaged in dischargin the duties of a soldier, and participated in all the battles which were so vigorously and hotly contested around Richmond, until the surrender of General Robert E. Lee with his forces, at Appomattox Court House; Captain Hinkley being pre- sent upon that memorable occasion. After the close of the war he returned home and immediately entered the law office of Stephen D. Lindsey, now a member of Congress from Blaine's old district, where he commenced the study of law, remaining until 1866, when he was admitted to practice. He came to Gentry County in the spring of 1867 and loca- ted at Albany. He was probate judge of the county from 1868 to 1872, and in 1881 was elected county superintendent of public schools. He has also been superintendent of the public schools of Albany. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
