Biographical Sketch of Moses H. Simonds, Gentry County, Missouri >From "History of Gentry and Worth Counties", Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar, St. Joseph, Mo.: National Historical Company, 1882. ********************************************************************** Moses H. Simonds. The next attorney who located in Gentry County was the subject of this sketch. The time of his arrival was but a few months subsequent to the coming of Col. Wood. He was also a native of Ohio and a graduate of the University of Ohio, and was a man of fine classical attainments. After leaving Ohio, he settled first in Clinton County, Missouri, at Plattsburg, where he taught school and studied law. He came from Plattsburg to Gentry County sometime during the year 1845, remaining here until the excitement consequent upon the Mexican War had risen to fever heat. Mr. Simonds caught the contagion and was instru- mental in raising a company of volunteers, with whom he embarked for the seat of war. Mr. George Davis, one of the oldest citizens of Clin- ton County, informs the writer that he saw Mr. Simonds just before his departure for Mexico, and when they were about to bid each other fare- well, having been friends for a number of years, Mr. Simonds suggested that they should exchange pocket books as souvenirs, which was accord- ingly done. Mr. Davis still has in his possession the pocket book given to him by Mr. Simonds, who died on his way to Mexico. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
