Biographical Sketch of Ebenezer H. Wood, Gentry County, Missouri >From "History of Gentry and Worth Counties", Biographical Sketches of the Bench and Bar, St. Joseph, Mo.: National Historical Company, 1882. ********************************************************************** Colonel Ebenezer H. Wood, was born in Delaware County, Ohio, about the year 1807. He acquired a good English education and possessed in addi- tion thereto excellent business qualifications. Colonel Wood, prior to 1840, met with the citizens of his county to perform muster duties. Because of his efficiency in military tactics, and because of his great popularity, he was elected a colonel of light infantry, which company armed and equipped itself. This, however, being done in a time of pro- found peace, Colonel Wood and his company were never called into active service. He emigrated from Ohio about the year 1842, stopping tempor- arily at some point in Missouri northwest of St. Louis until 1843, when he located in Daviess County, Missouri. He remained there until 1845, when he was appointed a commissioner by the governor of Missouri to assist two others in the location of the county seat of Gentry County. After the county seat was located, and in 1845, Colonel Wood moved to Athens, now Albany, being the first attorney to settle in the new coun- ty seat. He continued actively engaged in his profession until August, 1847, when he died. His was the first burial that occurred in the town. Colonel Wood was a smally, wiry man, very active, and had a host of friends among the pioneers of Gentry County. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
