Cooper Cemetery Gentry County Missouri: was used for burials of the community including Stanberry before High Ridge Cemetery was established in the northwest edge of Stanberry. Published transcriptions and family files are located in Gentry County Library in Stanberry MO. at N. Park Street. Thomas Cooper bought land for $1.25 per acre and he gave land for the cemetery on his farm. He was the first grave there. Cooper Cemetery is located almost due south of Stanberry 2 miles, in sect. 7; T62N, R32W. just south of Island Creek, commonly referred to as Island Branch. Many years ago a road led out south of Stanberry and across Island Creek to the cemetery but has long since been abandoned and access is now gained by going south of Stanberry on US 169 Highway for 1 1/2 miles to State Road E but turning west, away from E on a gravel road for 1/4 mile, south a 1/2 mile, west on a dirt road about a 1/2 mile and north still on a dirt road for about a 1/4 mile to the cemetery. The cemetery maintenance had dwindled away from lack of use as an active burial ground but in 1979, Ralph, Jr. "Mike" & Nadine (nee Johnson) McCampbell strove to restore the cemetery as much as possible, with lots of work and limited funds (mostly a labor of love). Several of Nadine's family are buried there. They removed saplings and brush, mowed and restored tombstones to the best of their ability. They researched family information as much as possible, to restore as much accurate information as possible, regarding the burials in the cemetery. John Joseph Cain, Civil War, buried in Cooper Cemetery had a real estate office over the old corner bank building in Stanberry. J. J. Cain got the Civil War cannon for the Stanberry City Park. (Editor note)From personal knowledge the corner building has been used for a City Hall since at least in the early 1950's through 2002.
