My mother moved to Amity today. +++++++++++++ Transcibers Note: The hardware store was still standing when we visited maybe four years ago. We neglected to walk around back to see where their quarters might have been. +++++++++++++ 1888 The winter was short, but severe. Heavy rains fell during the spring and summer, damaging hay and small grain very much. Other crops were fair. The measles broke out in our school about the 1st of April and reduced the attendance greatly. The school closed on May 23rd after a term of eight months, during which there was no vacation and but one holiday, Thanksgiving. After school closed, my family went to Stanberry for a short visit, while I went home to recruit on the farm. While at McFall, Dell was with us and George was with his grandparents at Stanberry. Edward wished to leave the farm to enter business and I concluded to quit the schoolroom for a time, at least, and go with him. On July 1st we commenced business at Amity, MO, having bought out the hardware stock of A. Beardry. Edward made a sale of personal property on Nov. 14th and on the 27th following, moved with mother to Amity, having purchased the house formerly owned by George Lloyd. Since coming to Amity, my family have spent more of their time at Stanberry owing to the sickness(?) of Mrs. Walters father who is now bedridden from the effects of a paralytic stroke. I may resume my old calling at some future time, but at present I am kept busy as a member of the firm of Wallets Bros. My mother has rented her farm and is not at all likely to return to it. During the year, our health has been fair. Jan 6, 1889. ++++++++++++++
