Ballard: Ed Clayton Ballard, 97, St. Joseph, died April 18, 2001 at a health care center in St. Joseph. Mr. Ballard had been a sheet metal worker at the Quaker Oats Co. in St. Joseph for 26 years until retiring in 1968. Prior to that, he was a ward attendant at St. Joseph State Hospital and a custodian at Humboldt Elementary School in St. Joseph. Born in Lamar, on Oct. 4, 1903, he lived in Stanberry, before moving to St. Joseph. Mr. Ballard was a graduate of Stanberry high school and served in the Missouri National Guard 128th Field Artillery of Maryville, of which he played in its band. He was a member of the Savannah Avenue Baptist Church, St. Joseph, where he served as deacon. He was the editor of the Young at Heart tabloid, which is geared toward senior citizens and published monthly by the St. Joseph News- Press. He also served on the Social Welfare Board and Excise Board. On May 19, 1929, he married Doris M. Moore in Troy, KS. She died in 2000. Mr. Ballard was also preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Ballard; a brother, William F. Ballard; three sisters, Marguerite Stafford, Lottie Heckenlively and Corliss Cole; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild and a great-great-grandchild. Survivors include three sons, John Ballard, Ashland; Gary Ballard, Bel Air, MD. and Lynn Ballard, Greenville, SC.; three daughters, Barbara Rose, Albuquerque, NM.; Marilyn Dranan, St. Joseph and Carolee Frakes, Kansas City; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Services were held April 21 at Savannah Avenue Baptist Church in St. Joseph with burial in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children's Home in care of the funeral home.
