News-Press; January 2, 2006: George J. Graham 1918-2005; LIBERTY, Mo. - George J. Graham, 87, of Liberty and a former resident of Alanthus Grove, Mo., passed away Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at his home. George, the son of Lee Murl and Maggie Ellen (Yount) Graham, was born Jan. 10, 1918, northwest of Alanthus. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, including a year spent on the island of Saipan in the South Pacific. On Feb. 21, 1944, he married Maxine Bentley; and they began their married lives in Stanberry, Mo. In 1949, they moved to a farm south of Alanthus and farmed until 1975. In the mid 1950s, he chaired the Gentry County ASCS committee, resigning in 1963 to purchase the grocery and feed store in Alanthus Grove. They moved from the farm to Alanthus in 1964 to be near the store. The family-owned business was operational for approximately 10 years. He then operated a road grader and bulldozer for Wilson Township until 1984. He was a member of the Alanthus Church of Christ for 52 years and then became a member of the Claycomo Church of Christ after moving to Liberty in 2000. He also was a member of the Raymond Sager American Legion Post No. 260, Stanberry. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Marvin Graham; and sister, Wanda Fern Scott. Survivors: wife, Maxine of the home; sons, Ron, and wife, Sharon, Stanberry; and Jim, and wife, Karen Lynn, Liberty; daughters, Anita Gail Buelow, and husband, Mark, Kearney, Mo.; and Karen Elaine Graham, Liberty; sisters, Vonciel Gillespie, St. Joseph; and Maxine Weatherd, Darlington, Mo.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the Alanthus Church of Christ. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2, at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Stanberry, where friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Monday. Burial: High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry, with military rites: Raymond Sager American Legion Post No. 260, Stanberry; and Tri-C Memorial Post No. 464, Conception, Mo. Memorials: Liberty Hospice.
