All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Don Raymond The Stanberry Headlight; Gentry County Mo.; Thursday, September 27, 1956: Final services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Stanberry Christian church for George William Harkrider, 68, who was taken by death Sunday evening at the Missouri Methodist hospital in St. Joseph. The rites were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. O. Glenn Crosby, and burial was in High Ridge cemetery, under the direction of the Phillips mortuary. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mayme Harkrider, of the home; two sons, Loren E. Harkrider, San Francisco, and William Harkrider, Jr., Kansas City; two daughters, Mrs. Norma Wilson and Mrs. Wilma Allen, both of Kansas City; a brother, A. F. Harkrider, Clarksdale, Mo.; a half-brother, Albert Harkrider, Denver, Colo., and five grandchildren. Mr. Harkrider, the son of the late John and Mattie Harkrider, was born Aug. 30, 1888, in Stanberry. He went to work for the Wabash railroad in 1908, being employed in the shops here. He later farmed for a number of years in this community before returning in 1926 to the Wabash, where he served as a fireman. He retired from railroading in 1947 because of ill health. His health never improved after his retirement from the road and he became seriously ill about three weeks ago. He was taken to the St. Joseph hospital the day before he was taken by death.
