All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Don Raymond The Tri-County News, Friday, June 17, 2005, page 20: Dotty Newman Mercer Holmes, 81, died at the home of her son, Ronnie, on June 12, 2005 in Stanberry. She was born March 23, 1924 in Alanthus Grove; the daughter of John Frederick and Mayme Serena (Yadon) Newman. She taught at Center Grove Rural School during World War II. Later, she worked as a clerk for Newman's Grocery Store in Alanthus Grove, then as a clerk for B&W Market in Stanberry. Mrs. Holmes was a tax collector for Wilson Township and had served as secretary for the Opportunity Workshop. She was a member of the Alanthus Grove Church of Christ. On June 10, 1943, Dotty was united in marriage to Dale Curtis Mercer. He preceded her in death Oct. 21, 1944. On Oct. 9, 1948 she married Leo Holmes. He died March 16, 1984. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jay and Bill Newman; two sisters, Neva Pierce and Hazel Marticke. Survivors include sons, Ronnie Mercer and wife, Sharon, Stanberry and Rick Holmes, Bethany; sisters, Gerthel Carlock, Albany, Betty Gabbert and Naomi Walker, both of Stanberry; a brother, F. J. "Hop" Newman, Albany; six grandsons, Douglas Mercer and wife, Lori, Lenexa, Ks.; Todd Mercer, Reeds Spring; Bryan Mercer, St. Louis; Jason Holmes and wife, Nellie, Coffey; Trent and Troy Holmes, Kansas City; a granddaughter, Jenny Donavon and husband Jeff, Olathe, KS.; great-grandchildren, Michael, Ashley, Jordan, Sage and Riley; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held June 14 at the Alanthus Grove Church of Christ with burial in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove. Memorial contributions may be given to the Gentry County Cancer Fund or Hands of Hope Hospice. Arrangements were handled by Roberson-Polley Chapel, Stanberry.
