All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Don Raymond The Stanberry Headlight, Gentry County, Missouri, Thursday, August 18, 1966; front page: Body Recovered From Reservoir: Grand county, Colo., authorities believe that the body of Lloyd E. (Sy) Holmes, formerly of this community, was recovered from the Williams Fork reservoir in the mountains north of Denver, Colo., Sunday morning by a fisherman. That is the information received here later that day by Ross E. Johnson of the Johnson Funeral Home from Coroner Russell Shedenhelm of Hot Sulphur Springs, Colo. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes, then living in Englewood, Colo., met their deaths when their boat capsized in the reservoir during an outing on June 23, 1960. Mrs. Holmes died from cold and exhaustion just 30 minutes before help arrived. Others in the boat recovered. Apparently the body was positively identified sometime Tuesday by the coroner with the help of a shoe which was found on the body when it was recovered Sunday morning. The body of Mr. Holmes, who was 40 when he drowned, was expected to arrive at the Johnson Funeral Home yesterday afternoon. Mr. Holmes is survived by three sons, Joe Holmes and Ronald Holmes, both of Kansas City, and John Holmes of Stanberry; a daughter, Miss Mary Holmes of Stanberry; a stepson, Archie Thomas of Kansas City; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Alta Campbell and Miss Reta Thomas, both of Kansas City, and Mrs. Judy Griffin of Englewood, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Holmes of Alanthus; a sister, Mrs. Lester Miller of Stanberry, and two brothers, Leo Holmes of Gentry and Melvin Holmes of Worth. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at High Ridge cemetery here under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Home. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Floyd Kolb of Jefferson City, former pastor of the Alanthus Baptist church.
