George R. Houston, 75 year-old retired electrical engineer, died in his sleep early Sunday morning at his farm home about 10 miles southwest of Stanberry. His death is believed to have occurred about 5 o'clock that morning, according to his attending physician, Dr. Zack Barnes, of King City. Mr. Houston, who spent nearly all of his early life in Stanberry, suffered a stroke about seven years ago and had been in ill health since that time. He was a member of a pioneer Stanberry business family. His parents were the late Henry and Sarah Cooper Houston. While he was born near Wichita, Kan., in his early childhood the family came to Stanberry and for many years his father operated a meat market here. He was a graduate of the Stanberry high school and of the old Stanberry normal. He then attended the University of Missouri where he was graduated from the school of engineering as an electrical engineer in the class of 1904. In 1907, he went to Birmingham, Ala. There he was associated with the cement manufacturing industry until health forced his retirement and in 1951 he returned to his land holdings southwest of Stanberry. He was a member of the Christian church in Birmingham, the blue lodge, the commandery and Zomers shrine temple in Birmingham, and of Tau Beta Ph, an engineering fraternity. Mr. Houston was married to Miss Octa Gepford Nov. 29, 1907. She survives him as does one daughter, Mrs. Troas P. Barrett, of King City and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held for him Tuesday afternoon at the Stanberry Christian church, with the Rev. Chas. R. Hagee officiating. Burial was in High Ridge cemetery. Funeral services were under the direction of the Phillips mortuary.
