Houston, 74, dies Friday at home here following illness of several months. William A. Houston, a resident of Stanberry for much of his life, died late Friday afternoon at this home here. He had been confined to his bed for the last six weeks and had been in failing health for several months. Mr. Houston, 74, a retried brick mason, had helped in the constructon of many Stanberry buildings. During his earlier years he was employed by Lou Valin, an early day Stanberry contractor. He helped in the construction of both the Methodist church and the Christian church buildings here. During periods of construction work at the Benedictine convent at Clyde, he had been employed there in masonry work. At other times he had been called to do similar work at Savannah and St. Joseph. For the past several years his health prevented him from following his trade. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Houston and was born June 13, 1878, at Whitesville, MO. In early life he came with his family to Stanberry. He was married to Miss Florene McClellan on Oct 29, 1902. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year. He was a member of the Stanberry Christian church. Surviving him are his widow, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Lester C. Thompson, King City; one son, Fletcher Houston, Stanberry; two sisters, Mrs. Willis Chapman, Stanberry, and Mrs. Homer Mount, Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Vernon Houston, Stanberry; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchldren. Funeral services were held for him Sunday afternoon at the Stanbery Christian church with the Rev. Charles R. Hagee officiating. Burial was in High Ridge cemetery. The services were under the direction of the Phillips mortuary.
