Sager, 88, Stanberry, died May 12, 2005 at Pine View Manor, Stanberry. He was born May 21, 1916 in Stanberry; the son of Elmer D. and Dora (Knoephel) Sager. As a young man, Mr. Sager, worked as a trucker and later as a mechanic. He entered the U. S. Navy in 1942 and served until the end of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a motor machinist, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Upon being discharged from the Navy, he operated Sager Bro. Garage, with his brother, August Sager, until 1948. At that time, he and his wife, Maxine, started farming, southeast of Stanberry, where they raised their two sons. They resided there until 1984 when they moved to Stanberry, while he still took an active interest in the farming. Mr. Sager served several years on the Board of Directors of the Consumers Oil Co. of Maryville and devoted many years as a trustee of the Stanberry United Methodist Church, where he had been a member for 54 years. Mr. Sager was united in marriage to Maxine Kerns on Dec. 27, 1944 in Troy, KS. They were married 53 years, when she died on June 25, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Ralph, Loyd and August, and a sister, Fern. Survivors include two sons, Milton (Janet) Sager and Mike (Paula) Sager, both of Stanberry; five grandchildren, Julie (Pat) Neuhalfen, Winterset, IA.; Rob (Marci) Sager, Stanberry; Emily and Carrie Sager, both of Des Moines, IA.; Stuart Sager, Stanberry; four great-grandchildre, Madilyn and Collin Sager and Matthew and Luke Neuhalfen; a brother, Melvin Sager, Lee's Summit; sister, Goldie Phillips and Evelyn Newby, both of Stanberry and Vivian Gamblin, Wichita, KS. Funeral services were held on May 16 at the Stanberry United Methodist Church. Burial was in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry. Memorial contributions may be given to the Stanberry United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Roberson-Polley Chapel in Stanberry.
