All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Don Raymond The Stanberry Headlight; Stanberry Gentry County Missouri; Thursday, December 21, 1950; front page: Monday Rites for Pioneer Woman: Mrs. Martha Jane Shisler Dies at Age of 90; Was Long-Time Resident Here: Mrs. Martha Jane Shisler, 90, a resident of Stanberry for most of her life, died at 1:35 o'clock last Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Idol, at Meeker, Colo., where she had made her home for about five years. She had been in failing health for some time. The body was returned to Stanberry Saturday night and funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Christian church here, conducted by the Rev. Charles R. Hagee, pastor. Burial was in the High Ridge cemetery. Mrs. Shisler was the widow of Obediah Shisler, a Stanberry alderman for many of his 43 years residence here. she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Stephenson, and was born May 19, 1860, on a farm northeast of Stanberry. She was married to Mr. Shisler on Dec. 2, 1880. His death occurred here April 7, 1943. In 1885 she and her husband followed the lure of the west and joined the then prominate migration from this section to Nebraska. They settled near Chadron, where they homesteaded a claim and farmed two others for four years. In 1889, they returned to Stanberry, where she made her home until failing health forced her to go to the home of her daughter for the extra care she required. She had been a member of the Christian church here for many years and during her long residence in Stanberry, made many friends. Surviving her are two daughters, Mrs. Idol, at whose home she died, and Mrs. Susan Taylor, also of Meeker; two sons, Roy Shisler, Meeker, and J. E. Shisler, Stanberry.
