All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm Submitted by: Don Raymond The Tri-County News; Friday, December 21, 2001: Velma Wharton, 95, Stanberry, died Dec. 19, 2001 at a Stanberry nursing home. Mrs. Wharton, the daughter of Dan and Nellie (Swearingen) Pierce, was born in Stanberry on April 22, 1906. In March of 1924 she married Lloyd Wharton. Together they owned and operated the Wharton Hardware in Pattonsburg from 1959 - 1969. He preceded her in death in 1987. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stanberry where she had been the oldest living member. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a son, Dudley Wharton and one sister, Norma Pierce Fulton. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Margie Wharton, Stanberry and granddaughter, Dana Wharton Newby, St. Joseph. Funeral services were held Dec. 22 at Roberson-Polley Chapel with burial in High Ridge Cemetery, both in Stanberry.
