(Hazelwood) Whittington, 89, Gentry, died July 1, 2002. Mrs. Whittington was born June 18, 1913, the only child of Porter and Gertrude (Temple) Hazelwood. At the age of three Aletha and her family moved to the homestead where she would live for the rest of her life. Mrs. Whittington earned a B.S. degree in elementary education from the Kirksville, Mo. College and taught in the Gentry County School system. Later, she earned a degree in library science and served as librarian and director of the Gentry County Library located in Stanberry. In 1947, she married George Whittington, who is deceased. Aleatha will long be remembered for her influence and support of many youth in the area during her long service as head librarian at the county facility. It was through her generous donations and leadership that the recently opened Gentry County Library facility was to become a reality. Survivors include several cousins, neices and nephews. Funeral services were held July 3 at the Johnson Funeral Home, with burial in High Ridge Cemetery, Stanberry.
