KING CITY WILL GET 1936 CORN CONTEST State Meet Here in 1933 and National 3 Years Later, Sponsor Promises King City has the promise of the national corn husking contest in 1936, according to Fred G. HOWITT, promoter of the corn-husking activities in this community, who attended the national contest last Friday at Norton, Kas. In recognition of King City's activity in promoting the contests in Gentry, DeKalb and Andrew counties and as a compliment to the farmers of this three-county area who have been interested in the contests since they were first started, George F. JORDAN, associate editor of the Missouri Ruralist, the farm paper which sponsors the contests, has made Howitt the promise of the national contest the next time it comes to Missouri. The Missouri state contest probably will be held at King City in 1933, Mr. Jordan told Howitt. Glen WASHBURN, Missouri state champion corn husker, placed seventh in the national contest last Friday at Norton, husking 27.57 bushels. First place and the national championship was won by Fred STANEK of Webster county, Iowa, with 30.34 bushels. Washburn, who is claimed by both King City and Union Star, was accompanied to Norton by Howitt and C. W. COOK. A motor truck load of farmers of the Empire Prairie community also went to Norton to help support Washburn in the contest. Forty thousand persons gathered at Norton to witness the contest, it was estimated. The program was "covered" (sic) by newspapers and news services, "sound news" (sic) photographers, and over radio by the National broadcasting system. It was Norton's biggest day. The program opened with a parade of floats and bands. Then toward noon there was a parade of corn huskers, their wagons and drivers. In the afternoon there was a women's corn husking contest, a turkey corn-eating contest and similar entertainmet (sic). At night there was a football game. Ellsworth KAPP of Clarksdale, Andrew county champion and Missouri's second representative in the national contest, finished in fourteenth place with 17.6 bushels.
