Biographical Sketch of Melvin S. Hoyal, Greene County, Missouri, Center Township >From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western Historical Company, 1883. ********************************************************************** Mr. Hoyal is the son of David R. and Margaret E. Hoyal, and was born in Roane County, Tennessee, October 29, 1844. In 1860 his parents moved to Lawrence County, Missouri, and in 1863 Melvin enlisted in the Con- federate army and served until the end of the war. He spent the years 1865 and 1866 in Colorado, Montana, and Dakota. He then came to this county and engaged in farming until 1879, when he went to Bois D'Arc and embarked in the mercantile business, under the firm name of Bymas- ter & Hoyal. In the spring of 1882 he became one of the firm of Hoyal, Redfearn & Johnson, the leading house of the place. Mr. Hoyal was married in 1866 to Miss Harriet E., daughter of Josiah F. and Lucy R. Redfearn, of Greene County. Their union has been blest with five chil- dren, four of whom are still living: Addie C., Leonidas S., Olive and Lucy.
