Biographical Sketch of Harry P. Merritt, Greene County, Missouri, North Springfield >From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western Historical Company, 1883. ********************************************************************** Mr. Merritt was born in Detroit, Michigan, June 12th, 1859. In March, 1873, he began learning the machinist's trade in the shops of the St. Louis and San Francisco railway, at North Springfield, and served an apprenticeship of three years. He then worked in the shops a year after he learned the trade. He then began firing upon an engine, and on the 8th of October, 1880, he was promoted to engineer, and has been running an engine ever since.
