Biographical Sketch of William S. Riggs, Greene County, Missouri, Springfield >From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western Historical Company, 1883. ********************************************************************** Mr. Riggs was born February 26, 1829, in Maury County, Tennessee. He was educated in his native county, and in 1855 he came to Greene Coun- ty, Missouri, and settled six miles north of Springfield. Here he was engaged in farming until 1867, when he moved into the city, where he has since been engaged in carpentering and hotel keeping. The hotel is on the corner of Boonville and Water streets, is a two story frame, 52x31, and contains thirteen rooms and basement. Mr. Riggs was marr- ied in March, 1856, to Miss Emily McCracken. Her family were among the earliest settlers of the county. They are blest with three sons and one daughter. Mr. Riggs' parents were natives of North Carolina. His father died in 1849 and his mother is yet living in the county.
