Biographical Sketch of Dewitt Shockley, Greene County, Missouri, Campbell Township >From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western Historical Company, 1883. ********************************************************************** This gentleman is the son of Benjamin and Lilly (Beal) Shockley, and was born in Giles county, Tennessee, August 9th, 1839. His parents came to Greene county, Missouri in 1841, where Dewitt grew to manhood and was educated. When he was quite young he began farming, settling upon a farm near the Shockley homestead. In August, 1862, he enlisted in Company D, 8th Missouri Cavalry, under Col. Geiger. He was at the battles Prairie Grove and Little Rock, and participated in many skirm- ishes. He was mustered out of service in November, 1865, and in the same year was married to Miss Clarissa Brown. She was born in Tenn., May 7th, 1848. She was reared in Searcy county, Arkansas, and lived there until 1862, and then came to this county. They are blessed with a family of five children, three girls and two boys. Mr. Shockley owns a farm of two hundred and ten acres of good land, and is one of the substantial citizens of the county.
