Biographical Sketch of Julian D. Smith, Walnut Grove Township, Greene County, Missouri >From "History of Greene County, Missouri," St. Louis: Western Historical Company, 1883. ********************************************************************** This gentleman is the son of William and Sarah (Julian) Smith, and was born in Laurel County, Kentucky, March 31, 1831. His father was a native of Kentucky, born in 1801, and died in Oregon in 1866. His mother was a native of Tennessee and died in 1876. They emigrated to Greene County, Missouri, in 1838, and settled upon Grand Prairie, in Center Township. Julian D. received his education in the common school of the county, and when he was twenty-two years of age took the "gold fever" and went to California. He stopped one winter at Salt Lake City and then pushed on to the gold fields of California. Not being very successful in the mines he returned to this county in 1855, and comm- enced farming, and with the exception of two trips to Texas has been a resident of this county ever since. He was married September 18, 1855, to Miss L. P. Landreth, daughter of William S. Landreth, one of the old settlers of Greene. They have a family of six children, four boys and two girls. Mr. Smith was in the militia during the war but took no active part in the struggle. He is a Greenbacker in politics, and one of the substantial farmers of his section.
