This is a photograph of Maria Evans Sleeper who was born Jan. 22, 1862 in
Missouri and died on Oct. 27, 1942 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas.

Maria Evans was the daughter of William George Evans and Sarah Isabel Baker
Evans. She married Gideon Daniel Sleeper (born October 5, 1858 in Amite
County, MS) on March 3, 1887 in Waco, TX by Rev. Rufus C. Burleson. She was a
charter member of Columbus Street Baptist Church of Waco.

The following is an obituary from the Waco News-Tribune on October 29, 1942,
p. 8:

SLEEPER, MRS. MARIA EVANS

Mrs. Maria Evans Sleeper, 80, died at 5 p.m. Wednesday at her home, 1302 North
Thirteenth street.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Wilkirson-Hatch chapel
with Dr. H. H. Hargrove, pastor of Columbus Avenue Baptist church,
officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be John T. Willis,[Sr.], Henry Quinius, Karl Sherman,
Roy Goebel, E. C. Robinson and Jack Owens.

She is survived by two sons, John Evans Sleeper of Houston and Harold G.
[George] Sleeper of Waco.
