Brumfield, M.D., is a native of Putnam County, Indiana, and was born May 16, 1854, being the son of Hon. James B. Brumfield, a Kentuckian by birth, who went to Indiana when a young man with his parents and located in Putnam County. James Brumfield was married in that county to Sophia Ann Rogers also of Kentucky. The former improved a farm and carried on a blacksmith shop in connection and afterward was also engaged in merchandising. He early took a prominent part in political matters; was nominated and elected to represent his county, and served two terms in the legislature. W. C. Brumfield passed his youth in his native county upon the farm, receiving his primary education at the public schools, supplemented with three years' attendance at the Green Castle College. He came west in November, 1873, settling at Clinton, Henry County, and commenced the study of medicine with Drs. Britts and Jennings as preceptors in the fall of the same year. He attended his first course of lectures at the St. Louis Medical College in the winter of 1874-75, and was graduated in the spring of 1877. He commenced the active practice of his profession at Colesburg where he has built up a successful and constantly increasing patronage.
