ERHART BIOGRAPHIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== ERHART, Nicholas - b: 1831 Bavaria, Germany source: 1883 History of Henry Missouri , National Historical Co. - page: 764 residence: Bear Creek Twp Nicholas Erhart was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 19, 1831, and was the son of George and Susana Erhart, nee Schreffer, also natives of Bavaria. Nicholas emigrated to the United States in 1844, and while on the way to Missouri his mother died in Pennsylvania. He spent his youth on a farm and was educated in his native country. He served in the Mexican war six months, and after his discharge was engaged in freighting to Santa Fe for three years. In 1852 he crossed the plains to California and remained two years. In the early part of 1855 he returned to Missouri and located land in Henry County with a warrant received for his service in the Mexican war. He now owns 1,300 acres. Mr. Erhart was married in this county in the summer of 1855 to Miss Melvina Coffelt, a Kentuckian by birth and a daughter of Philip Coffelt. They have four children: Melvina V. (now Mrs. C. Detro), Georgian G., Ida Belle and Nellie. Mrs. Erhart is a member of the M. E. Church. Mr. E. served one year in the Missouri State Militia and participated in the battle of Lone Jack.
