Thomas Hamilton, farmer and stock raiser, sections 22 and 23, a native of 
Monogalia County, West Virginia, was born July 24, 1824. Stephen Hamilton, his 
father, was born in Virginia, and his mother, formerly Nancy Mackabee, was 
originally from Maryland. Thomas Hamilton moved to Indiana with his parents in 
1830 and located in Delaware County, they being among the first families 
settling in that county, and grew to manhood in that county. He passed his youth 
there upon a farm, and in 1848 came west to Illinois, locating first in Jersey 
County, where he farmed three years, then removing to Coles County. Here he 
entered land, and after living upon it four years he sold out, and in 1857 came to 
Henry County, Missouri, entering and improving the farm where he now resides. 
He has a fine body of land of 320 acres, upon which is a large two-story 
residence, one of the best in the township. Mr. Hamilton was married in this 
county in September, 1858, to Miss Ann Elizabeth Paterson, a native of Indiana, 
and a daughter of Samuel Patterson. They have five children: Henry E., Silas S., 
Charles D., U. S. Grant and Venora S. Mr. and Mrs. H. are members of the Missionary 
Baptist Church.
