Mohrweis, a native of Wurtemberg, was born January 25, 1851, and was the son of Peter Mohrweis. His mother's maiden name was Christena Wehrlin, and they were also originally from that locality. John G. passed his youth, up to sixteen years of age, at the public schools of his birthplace, where he received a fair education. Emigrating to the United States in 1867 he located in Greene County, Illinois, where he commenced learning the blacksmith trade, working there under instructions about two years. In 1869 he came to Henry County, Missouri, and for a time lived on a farm with his uncle, John M. Mohrweis, who is now one of the substantial farmers of this county, where he settled in 1865. After remaining in Henry County about five years, Mr. M. returned to Illinois and worked on a farm about two and a half years. In 1877 he went to Oregon and located at Salem, where he spent two years in a machine shop. While in the west he passed some time traveling through Oregon and California.
