Frederick E. Savage is the seventh child of John and Margaret (Frizell) Savage, and was born in Lewis County, Kentucky, August 12, 1836. His educational advantages were excellent. Besides attending the common schools of his county he was a student of Delaware College, Ohio, where he received a collegiate education. In 1856 he began the study of law under the instruction of J. B. Houston, Esq., at Washington, Kentucky, and after pursuing his studies for six months he entered the law office of S. Holbrook, at Clarksburg, in the same state. There he remained for one year, when he went to St. Louis, Missouri, where he continued to read law in the office of Judge William T. Wood until December, 1857, when he came to Henry County, Missouri, and located at Clinton, the county seat. In 1858 he entered upon the practice of law, continuing therein until 1861, when he enlisted as first lieutenant in Company A, Owens' Battery, Southern army. After being in the army six months he resigned and returned to his native state, where he resided about a year, when he again enlisted in the Southern army, this time joining Company C, Seventh Cavalry, General John Morgan's command, with which he served as a faithful and gallant soldier until the close of the war. In 1865 he located in Scott County, Kentucky, and commenced teaching school, continuing said occupation until November, 1868, when he returned to Clinton, Missouri, and immediately resumed the practice of law. In 1874 he was elected judge of the probate court, the duties of which he faithfully and ably administered for four years. He filled the office of county attorney, one term by appointment. In May (20) 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss L. M.
