The subject of this sketch was born in Floyd County, Virginia, January 20, 1837, being the son of Owen and Lavina (Fliger) Floyd {corr. Wade}, natives of Virginia. Eli was the third of a family of twelve children. His youth was passed on the farm in Virginia, and he received a common school education, following farming until 1871, when he began working at wagon making and carpentering in Tennessee and Illinois. In 1872 he removed to Lafayette County, Missouri, giving his attention to farming two years, after which he worked at wagon making in Higginsville for three years. In 1876 he came to Henry County, Missouri, and remained in Clinton for one year. Since that time he has been occupied in farming. In March, 1880, he took charge of the county farm and has continued to manage it to the entire satisfaction of the citizens of the county. In 1861 he enlisted in Company D, Fifty-fourth Virginia Infantry, and was sergeant of his company. At Bentonville he was captured and taken to Point Lookout, where he was confined for three months. He is a member of the M. E. Church, South. Mr. Wade was married November 14, 1874, to Miss Bettie Albine, of Lafayette County, Missouri. They have two children: Laura and Herbie.
