History: Stephen Decatur Vickars was the son of James Vickars who came from Ireland and settled in Maysville, KY and later in the Kanawha Valley region of Virginia (now West Virginia). James Vickars built the first steamboat and was involved in transporting produce to New Orleans. In 1842, his son Stephen, came to Grand River Township (now Bear Creek) in Henry County and entered free government land. His wife, Frances Marion Stewart was born in Fauquier County, VA, the daughter of Daniel Stewart and Ann E. Walker. The Stewart family moved to Henry County shortly after the Vickars had settled. Stephen and Frances Vickars had three children; William Henry (1842-1911), Mary Emeline (ca:1848- ca:1862), and Frances Ann "Nannie" Carter (1850-1889) wife of William F. Carter. Dr. Mark A. Stewart, a brother to Frances, is found living with the Vickars family in the 1850 federal census of Henry County. The doctor and his wife and one infant daughter are buried here. The first school organized in the southeast corner of the county is said to have been held at the home of Stephen Vickars. He is also credited with building the first large residence in the county, which was used for many years as a landmark. ==================================================================== STEWART, Alice Amanda PHILLIPS - b: Nov 17 1845 KY - d: Nov 8 1879 Henry Co, MO - dau of William & Mary PHILLIPS - m: Oct 1865, Cooper Co, MO to Dr. Mark A.
