BACKES OBITUARIES, Henry County, Missouri ==================================================================== BACKES, Martha Viola CRIST 1917 - 1994 Martha Viola Backes, 77 of Clinton, died Saturday, April 30, 1994, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton after a short illness. She had lived for 43 years in Henry County, moving here from Watonga, Ok. in 1951. Mrs. Backes was born in Los Angeles, Ca., on February 17, 1917, the daughter of Rhoda Ann Roach Crist and Harry C. Crist. On April 22, 1933, she was married to Lewis Joseph Backes. Five children were born to this union. She is survived by her three daughters. Mrs. Kenneth (Martha) Dody of Deepwater, Mrs. Lou (Rose) McVey of Independence, and Mrs. Jerry (Barbara) Shaw of Acworth, Ga.; three granddaughters, Mrs. Bill (Patsy) Smith and Mrs. Jimmie (Betty) Scott, both of Clinton, and Miss Juanita McVey of Independence: one grandson. Louie McVey II of Independence; three great-grandchildren, Kenny and Emilie Scott and Caleb Smith, all of Clinton. Besides her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, one as an infant, Joseph Henry, and Robert Joseph (Bob) Backes. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Martha will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Funeral services were held at the Sickman and Dunning Chapel on Tuesday, May 3, 1994, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Rolf Leed officiating. Pallbearers were Bill Smith, Jimmie Scott, Harold Dody, Wayne Hehner, Pat McGinness, and Don Kiefer. Honorary pallbearers were Louis McVey II and Mike Thompson.
